DEK: A letter from Provincetown

.

“L’Affaire Sal’s Place: Money and Meanness in the New Ptown."

By Peter Manso

The first thing you notice when you walk into the resurrected Sal’s Place, in the heart of Provincetown’s West End, is the hustle and bustle of a hot restaurant: the place is packed, the noise level is high, and the servers scoot nonstop to and from the close-set tables. There’s a museum-quality Hawthorne and other class art on the walls, but the place still has a fish shack feel, with exposed rafters and the rhythmic slop of the bay against the pilings on which the waterfront building partially sits. And the food—the Brodetto or Zuppa di Pesce that one Facebook blogger raves about as “so wonderful that Marcella [Hazen] herself would flip,”—well, let me tell you, the Zuppa is so sweet, so transporting in its plummy, tomato-y tannic richness as to have made Sal’s the vacation spot’s dining destination of choice near overnight.

All this was pretty much the word around town last summer when the fifty-four year old Sal’s Place reopened under new management. But the food wasn’t the only things people were talking about. There were also whispers that the owner—a single, self-described blue-collar woman who’d originally arrived in Boston from Tipperary at age 17—was at war with her neighbors—four wealthy men, all gay, who had recently bought the abutting properties for summer party pads, and wanted the place dead and shuttered. In fact, depending on who you knew, you might have heard about bouts of property destruction, interminable delays for the restaurant’s opening, and armies of lawyers getting rich on both sides.

As the not-so-secret knock-down-drag-out tumbled into public view, eating there became an almost political act. Now, after simmering all winter, locals in P-Town are waiting for the hostilities to start afresh.

One resident called the quarrel the “worst case of bullying” he’d come across in his 50 years in town. But you could just as well call the fight over Sal’s place a sort of battle for Provincetown’s soul in miniature—a David and Goliath story about whether the artists, fishermen, and non-mainstream types of all persuasions were still welcome in the new Ptown. Or is this haven at the end of the Cape destined to become an exclusive enclave for the rich gay elite?

Lady Di

I read the article in the Cape Cod Times, it's all true he was treated so badly and I hope he will shout out the haters and get the money he deserves.  It is really despicable how this kind of behavior continues in the new administration.

Good luck, you conducted yourself with dignity and grace and look where it got you!

"It's For the Kids"

For the 30 kids getting the 300000. for wee care, more welfare to the working class of the Town.  While others ride the system, they'll be dropping the kids off at wee care so they can work 3 jobs to pay the bills.  Otherwise they could stay home and spend real time with their kids.  Welfare for the working class.

Do we have a list of people running for open seats this year?

Is it necessary for the police to patrol in sectors when the town is only 3 miles long?  Hmmm who's thought was that.....

More Thanks to Yingling

Removing those awful parking spaces on Bradford street

Making sure CVS comes to town.

Enabling Panagore to continue abusing Town Hall Staff.

Dating Gloria so we could waste years and money while she pursued her agenda and without an LCP

WHATEVER WILL WE DO WITHOUT YOU?

4:28 pm edt

Thank You Erik Yingling For:

Costing voters a half million dollars to settle with Jaran
Keeping the VFW empty
Not making housing at the community center
Giving all the Economic development water to your new boss.

But most of all thank you for keeping provincetown a second homeowner community and forcing 376 people to leave for lack of housing.

Pat yourself on the back.

Time to Clean House

McPherson is gone. Now clean house. all those who supporter and were threatened by her, time to leave. You had no balls then and you have no balls now. Sad but true and you should go or be pushed out.

this is a great town that needs great leadership. It is not there. A vacuum. so bring in the new. Now.

DPW-Snow

This is to the DPW. Snow plows push snow up so high in front of driveways that people cannot get their car out. Then off-duty DPW workers go around after hours and charge people to clear the driveway. In one case, an elderly woman was charged $100 for the ten minutes it took to clear the snow that he had pushed there a few hours before. What a racket!!

4:17 pm edt

She's Gone

I just heard---she's gone

gone from here, of course but gone from there. that is great news. payback is a bitch, isn't it, Gloria? I'd say so.

Re: Did We Win the Lottery?

Continuation of previous post.   A rough count of approximately $5 million in additional article spending glancing through the warrant.  I cant afford that care free spending by the town, glad all of you are flush with cash.

Did We Win the Lottery?

Glanced at the Town meeting warrant.  Dang the money is flowing out like we are rich, did we win the lottery?

One Rotten Apple Spoils the Bunch

And so I have found as a contractor that one bad apple in Community Development spells trouble. When G. McPherson was running the show, people changed. It became chaotic, more unpredictable and harder to get things done. She altered the behavior downstairs and others became themselves toxic. The bad attitude and disregard spread in this department.

How long will it take to get back to what it used to be before McPherson ran this show. Bad behavior spreads and it did.

4:09 pm edt

DPW Drama

I feel very reassured (sarcasm) knowing that some people are out there laughing and minimilizing a death threat, because it was indeed a death threat.  Telling someone you are going to shoot them in the head is a death threat.  This is a big deal, this is a serious problem and to try and reduce this to the normal winter PTown bullshit rumor mill is not fair.  This is an incident above and beyond drunken winter boredom.  For a town thats supposedly a safe haven and supposedly takes care of its own, the person who was threatened sure doesnt feel taken care of when the man who threatened his life still has his job.  He sure doesnt feel taken care of when other coworkers make snide comments because they are old friends with the man who threatened him.  He sure doesnt feel protected when he has to deal with harassment in the work place by the friends of the other man.  So Provincetown employs people who threaten bully and intimidate coworkers to the point that said coworker required police escorts to work in the morning?  Way to take take of your people Town of Provincetown.  That man should have been terminated immediately with no second thoughts on the matter.  Good job with zero tolerance.

Wellfleet??

The bigger question for the town of Wellfleet is how many dispensaries do we want in this area. She rejected Bradys suggestion that the Cape was underserved. Provincetown is dealing with four dispensaries that are already in the pipeline, she said. I dont want to see that in WF.

Re: How Can This Happen?

Wow, a bit over the top, no? Death threats? We're in the wild west!
Good ole Ptown, when winter is the ripe season for stories to explode into something they truly are not, where people are so bored with their own lives, they decide to focus on one story like bunch of vultures, picking at the carcass and spreading the rumor disease, thinking it will never effect them in the long run. Remember karma? Comes around and bite back even harder the second time. It's always just a matter of time.

Send e-mails and inform us. You need to do more. this is ridiculous.  Here is the update, they say. and then say nothing much. Let's get professionals in here. Let's get an engineer to help and people who know how to protect the town from flooding. this is Amateur Night. How frustrating. If you don't know what you're really doing, then bring in outsiders who do. enough pretense when the dangers are severe and few know what to do. and you are the few who do not know what to do.

McPherson and Panagore - Perfect Match

If It took the Mayor of New Bedford less than 2 Months to Fire Gloria McPherson as City Planner

then why did Town Manager David Panagore keep this problematic woman for four years when she showed her unstable and vindictive nature here? What was he afraid of? McPherson should have been fired at least two years ago. She has done her damager here and many are suffering from the results of her illegal and unethical behavior.

What does the Mayor of New Bedford think when he re-reads Panagore's glowing recommendation that he hire McPherson? You know what he is thinking!!

I drove to Herring Cove Beach yesterday and was heartbroken when I saw that the parking lot was almost gone. I think the 'perfect storm' of Climate Change (man-made), draggers and removal of the stone jetties all contributed to the demise of our beautiful beach. Sigh. Not sure if there are any plans to move back the parking lot and road. So many childhood memories, sunsets, whale watching from shore. End of an era. Sigh.

Wowwwwwww.  So people think they know the facts?  This is hilarious.  If you knew all of the facts youd understand just how crazy the whole situation really is.  Im hopeful and optimistic that the towns process will work this out in the correct manner but still, at the end of the day, someone did threaten anothers life.  Its a serious issue, lets hope its treated as such.  This isnt some pissing contest, this is a problem thats effected work environment as well as home environment for some people.  I also was under the impression that this whole thing is supposedly anonymous so how would someone know if a person is responding to their own comments?  Ahhhh PTown and its dirty little secrets.  Lets just wait and see what actually happens at the end of this.  If it isnt turf wars and real estate rumors then apparently it doesnt matter?  Well see.
12:36 pm est

Re: How Can This Happen?

"Because it didn't happen.
You know the "facts" because you're pushing the issue for different reasons, all personal between you and your supervisor and this person along with anyone else you both don't like. Grow up, grow a pair, deal with internal personel matters internally and stop whining on an anonymous blog when you don't get your way. Do your own job, stop posting crap on social media sites like Facebook and mind your own business."

First of all, it DID happen.  Second of all, I just happen to indeed know all of the facts and third of all this became much more than an internal work matter when it spilled over into personal home life. This incident has been simmering for weeks and with any luck, the work related interpersonal matters will be settled this week.  But, and this is a big but, just because the work part of this issue will be settled this week, that does not mean the safety of the man who was threatened and his family will feel any safer or secure.  A threat to shoot someone in the head is much much more than a work issue, that is a threat on someones life.  Thats a death threat.  I can assure you that this issue was not pushed for any internal personell matters between anyone and their supervisor.  In fact, before this issue snowballed into insanity and death threats, it was being handled with the intent to seek counseling and assistance for this person rather than immediate discipline.  Help!
  was offered, help was declined.

And now we end up here, with an employee who threatens the life of another employee and has caused a toxic, hostile and unsafe work environment.  Do YOU think you know all the facts?  Because I guarantee you dont unless you are one of a very few specific people.  I may or may not be one of those very specific people.  What I will not allow is any more harassment by this man who is currently waiting for the town to deal with it.  Whoever said civil suits may be flying was very much correct.  I dont feel like many are fully grasping the big picture here.  Employee X has a history of harassment and unstable behavior.  Help was offered, counseling was offered, yet the threats and nonsense continued.  I hope with every ounce of my being that lessons were learned and decisions will be thought out more in the future but to try and reduce this issue to a spat between two workers, one trying to get the other fired for any type of personal gain is absolutely ludicrous.  This.  Was.  A!
.  Death.  Threat.  It needs to be taken seriously.

Town Planner- Here We Go Again!

Prediction:

Having recently lost her position as Town Planner  in New Bedford (They got wise to her), McPherson will try along with her cronies to regain her position here in Provincetown.

I say NFW!! We don't need a Town Planner and most certainly not her! The person that proposes to rehire her should be removed from office if they are a town employee or BOS member e.g. Yingling and Donegan!

Re: Anyone??

Usually, it takes a number of days for a submission to be posted here on this site for all to read. Then it takes a few more for the responses to be posted. Looks like the guy posting crap about town employees posted his original comments and then answered his own post 3 minutes later. That would seem impossible considering the comments take as long as they do to be posted.
Seems more like agenda driven comments, someone that is too focused on screwing his coworker, someone that can't seem to shut up about matters he shouldn't be discussing. Same guy posted crap in here last week and got no responses so now responds to his own posts with more crap.

Re: Anyone??

Anyone know if there is any truth to the story I heard about a Town employee threatening to SHOOT another Town employee??! WTF is going on with these guys? Hoping someone is doing something....

Yes this is 100% true and Im told the man who did the threatening currently is on paid leave.  Termination should have been a guarantee, lets see if the town of provincetown fails to act accordingly yet AGAIN.  Nobody, I repeat NOBODY, should be allowed to keep a position for the town when they threaten to shoot another employee.  Maybe a little nepotism is going on here.  Favoritism at the least, the good ol boy network protecting one of their own.  Somebody for sure is covering for this man considering he hasnt been fired and this incident happened weeks ago.  A man cannot threaten another mans life.  If this isnt settled soon I see civil suits flying left and right, mark my words.

9:57 pm est

How Can This Happen?

Are you aware that a town employee threatened to shoot another employee in the head and that the employee who did the threatening has not been terminated?  In this day and age of school shootings and rampant violence, why is this man still employed by the town of Provincetown?  How can we permit such things to happen?

I Too Was Shocked at the Conservation Agent Tim Famulare

Where does he come from? Who hired him? This last idea of his concerning the deck at Sal's confused me--and made me question his credentials and understanding of this town. And wasn't he the one who failed to post this case within the needed time frame and then had to cancel the case at the previous meeting? Who is pulling his strings? Why should receiving a fair hearing on too many boards is a problem in Provincetown. Why, indeed!

He should be ashamed of this off-the-wall request, no demand, that he insisted be added to the approval of the deck that was removed by the contractor for 101 Commercial to accomplish his renovations. It was Cape Cod docks that removed the deck and also the seawall and promised to rebuild and install a new deck by January 2016. But Cape Cod docks just washed their hands of this flagrant act and then Greg Connors legally misrepresented himself by stating in legal documents that the removal of the deck had nothing to do with him. "Well, it surely did and Cape Cod Docks was doing his bidding and did remove the entire deck and also destroyed the sea wall that will continue to cause flooding for abutters and neighbors across the street.

I was glad to see more than 120 people attend this Conservation meeting and over 70 letters sent in favor of re-installing the deck. Those who know the truth, know.

There will Be No FEMA Monies for Provincetown

Nor for any other community. seems we needed even more damage--up to $9 million and we only had $5.9 million. this will certainly bring frustration to the many in Provincetown who suffered much from the flooding. Let me  mention that a phone call to Sarah Peake and another to Julian Cyr is not enough political pressure on the governor. What else did our town "leaders" do beside write a report of damages!!

Sadly, you are on your own! there is need for more accountability. seems the town simply turned away and quickly forgot about the pain, financial loss and damage done to many. It's not enough to sit in an office and talk and talk. It takes pointed and strategic action and political clout. Obviously lacking here.
