DEK: A letter from Provincetown

“L’Affaire Sal’s Place: Money and Meanness in the New Ptown."

By Peter Manso

The first thing you notice when you walk into the resurrected Sal’s Place, in the heart of Provincetown’s West End, is the hustle and bustle of a hot restaurant: the place is packed, the noise level is high, and the servers scoot nonstop to and from the close-set tables. There’s a museum-quality Hawthorne and other class art on the walls, but the place still has a fish shack feel, with exposed rafters and the rhythmic slop of the bay against the pilings on which the waterfront building partially sits. And the food—the Brodetto or Zuppa di Pesce that one Facebook blogger raves about as “so wonderful that Marcella [Hazen] herself would flip,”—well, let me tell you, the Zuppa is so sweet, so transporting in its plummy, tomato-y tannic richness as to have made Sal’s the vacation spot’s dining destination of choice near overnight.

All this was pretty much the word around town last summer when the fifty-four year old Sal’s Place reopened under new management. But the food wasn’t the only things people were talking about. There were also whispers that the owner—a single, self-described blue-collar woman who’d originally arrived in Boston from Tipperary at age 17—was at war with her neighbors—four wealthy men, all gay, who had recently bought the abutting properties for summer party pads, and wanted the place dead and shuttered. In fact, depending on who you knew, you might have heard about bouts of property destruction, interminable delays for the restaurant’s opening, and armies of lawyers getting rich on both sides.

As the not-so-secret knock-down-drag-out tumbled into public view, eating there became an almost political act. Now, after simmering all winter, locals in P-Town are waiting for the hostilities to start afresh.

One resident called the quarrel the “worst case of bullying” he’d come across in his 50 years in town. But you could just as well call the fight over Sal’s place a sort of battle for Provincetown’s soul in miniature—a David and Goliath story about whether the artists, fishermen, and non-mainstream types of all persuasions were still welcome in the new Ptown. Or is this haven at the end of the Cape destined to become an exclusive enclave for the rich gay elite?

Re: Beware New Bedford of Gloria McPherson

OMG.  Gloria is gone.  Get over it.

What the.....

A Mother calls for Sleeping Beauty to be banned from primary school as it promotes inappropriate behavior

In reading the story, the mother states the prince should have asked Sleeping Beauty's permission before kissing her......he couldn't she was asleep.

Well in that case:

Doesn't Cinderella promote men with foot fetishes?

Or Snow White getting her jollies with 7 midgets...oops little people.

Hansel and Gretel harass an old woman after she builds her dream house...they then come by and eat it.

Beauty & The Beast promoting bestiality!!

When will the madness end?  If you want to see evil in certainly will.

Um, what about letting men use a woman's restroom?? Isn't that more of an issue than a fairy tale??

We really need to reel it in folks.

"We, here in Provincetown, are celebrating a good thanksgiving with Gloria McPherson gone from our waters."

Oh Jesus, let it go. You're the one that brought up Sharon's departure for years. Got it. You're glad all them nasty women got up and left. But, unfortunately for the rest of us, you're still here, spewing your inane opinions. I hope I don't know you.

Now Tiny Houses are the Answer?

No, actually they are not. They are completely inefficient use of public land.  That's at least what Donegan used to think when he used to think.  Who knows where he is now.

It would be nice if the BOS and the town in general could formulate a plan for housing and actually stick with it.  Maybe even put someone in charge?  Let's look at the video tape:

- The VFW is the answer to our prayers for affordable housing.  Four years later it sits empty and there is no plan in sight for that land.  No plan and no shame as far as I can tell.

- Let's buy the Campgrounds!  Well, deRuyter scooped the town on the camp grounds and has supposedly approached the town to figure out how to make a lot of money with the Town's help.  Oops, I mean out of the goodness of his developer heart he's going to build tiny houses.  One or the other.  (Or both he'll argue in 50,000 words nobody will read.)

- The community center has been well covered.  That process was a total joke and an affront to Town Meeting.

- Harbor Hill.  We'll be lucky if Harbor Hill isn't worse than the Manor in terms of its impact on town finances and we all remember that fiasco.  Spending $10 million on a property only to discover that you're going to have to spend millions more to reconfigure it because there is no demand for the units is the definition of malfeasance.  I can hardly wait until the BOS has to get up in front of town meeting after the reserve is spent to ask for its annual subsidy for HH.  Donegan will be termed off the BOS by then and R. Richter will have moved to Truro.  I almost feel bad that Cheryl is going to get all the flack when people realize they were mightily duped.  Yingling may even be able to figure it out and Bobby Anthony might wake up.  Nah.

- LOL.  I almost forgot the strategy to seize Duarte's by eminent domain. Actually, that idea probably made more sense than Harbor Hill tbh.

- Now it's tiny houses.  I guess it's better than Russo's idea to squat in rich homeowners' houses.  I always assumed her house was off limits for the months she spends at her other house in Mexico, but I was never 100% sure on those details.  It's hard to be a socialist land baron.

Here's some reality:

Provincetown's year-round community isn't going to expand.  Why?  Because there is zero to drive economic expansion.  The BOS can make it their only priority and it isn't going to change economic reality.

Provincetown is a seasonal tourist community and that's all it's ever going to be.  Expecting otherwise is the definition of insanity.

Beware New Bedford of Gloria McPherson

".  .  .However, poor New Bedford, will soon find their waters disturbed and turbulent with the advent of McPherson heading their Planning Department. Just look at our impoverished Planning board!"

You sound like the same person warning Rehobeth Beach of impending doom with Sharon going there.  Such built up bitterness,  let it go, no wonder no one wants to work for this town.

I'm not a fan of Gloria, but I wish her all the best in her new position.

Provincetown 2017

Canteen wins out with not only gliding by rules and regulations but also getting employee housing.
Im a new business owner and Im wondering if volunteering is this valuable ? I heard from many on the in, that if you volunteer and live here year round you can get away with anything.  As                   got and additional multiple family status when others could only wish for that same benefit so their friends,  family, and artis alike could live in their house and have an addtional kitchen and also grated a separate unit status.  Wow thats great
Just like our volunteer,                         whom was granted extra bedrooms for his second home on Province land Road.    Who also showed up at town meeting with  his large voting group to get his private road paved at the year round tax paying residents.   Where is Cheryl Andrews during all this.  Shes voting yes to making the taxpayers pay for this outrageous misuse of tax dollars, is she republican or demorcratic? Im thinking she is for whatever, even if she doesnt know how it cost us, the taxpayers more Money, Thanks Cheryl for your leadership.  You also said it was ok for the taxpayers to fund Harbor Hill, another Manor.   Im truly disappointed in your leader ship, Cheryl.
Robert Anthony, economicic develoment in favor of Creative Commons
I ask you this, wheres the money?  .  I havent seen this endeavor do anything but ask everyone for money including town preservation funds.
No jobs,  no nothing. A year later.  At least the other offer for 600 thousand would have been money in our pocket. Also providing workforce housing like our play book stated so adomaomatly.   Are you awake .
Ding a ling, Im glad you are going to see Rob Anderson makes as much  as you and you family has off our tax paying dollars using every program and all funds giving by the town, because you know how Tom fill out the form, aka know the Ptown written verbiage to get away with any and everything you want.   Cudous to you !
Tom Donegan,
I have been in your circle both before and after you saw the light however you were by far more likeabke then. You are driving our town  into despair,  based on your need to be liked, loved, noticed, and whatever. Now I,and  we see you as a disappointment. You should spend more time in New York at your swank restaurants and having cocktails  with your New York Friends and community.
What I wish we had in Provincetown,
Selectmen and town official that remembered and lived here long enough to remember how things were.
Not just using the words folks but actually living here to know what Provincetown was really like before, as these people in power all have their hand in the candy jar.
Im sure Anthony and Mary Jo,  will be selling those two bedrooms units at Harbor Hill  we didnt need, so they can make a little  something something.

Lets  have a reboot , Provincetown and figure out what we really need to To do to make this a year round community.

Thank You Michael for Everything You Have Done

Michael gave his all. He has been a most dedicated town hall employee. He worked so hard to maintain the grounds and he did excellent work. He is a sweet and kind man and I will miss his presence. He was a pleasure to talk with and I enjoyed his conversations.

I wish Michael the best in his retirement but I want him to know that he will be missed by many of us.

To the Rat

The traps are still set!!
12:53 pm est

Harbor Hill et Donegan and Truth

Tom Donnegan said that he wants to convert some of the two bedrooms to one bedrooms at Harbor Hill.

This statement demonstrates how inept and incompetent he is.

The lot size does not allow the creation of a single additional dwelling unit per our zoning bylaws.

Let's not forget the current 1980's septic system cannot be tested until after closing, a requirement of the bankruptcy court to sell the property "as is."

Should it fail and be allowed to hook up to the sewer under "affordable housing" gallonage allotment, the sewer betterment and sewer user fee will need to be added to the rental fee, all of which will make the units even less affordable than currently projected.

Stay tuned for this and additional renovation surprises.

Town voters may return Harbor Hill to private ownership sooner than later.

12:51 pm est

Tiny Houses

"Yes, let's buy tiny houses and build a multilevel underground parking garage and do this and that and the other...."

You know how you're all worried about Provincetown becoming an enclave of the rich?  Spend that kind of money, raise taxes and you'll pretty much guarantee that only the rich can afford it here.  Meanwhile, all of the folks just hanging on by a thread will be forced to move.  Smart.  Not.
12:47 pm est

Connecting the Dots

Perhaps a monorail should be installed going from Harbor Hill to Creative Commons to the Canteen.

Tiny Houses

Can't wait to see what the town officials do with this one.
7:13 pm est

Tiny houses

People on Town Talk think the BOS and the TM are going to eat up the tiny house idea like candy.  Fraid Not.
They will talk about it and talk about it and then pay the lawyers thousands more to force us into Harbor Hill.
Someone asked Panagore about a parking garage and he talked about building and selling it.  I think he should be a REALTOR not the Town Manager.
So, no to the houses, yes to his friends.

And Myra, of course your  friend wasn't admitted to Town Talk- she's a woman and Panagore is as Misogynistic as TRUMP.  A woman hater at his core.

Town Manager - Panagore

Can I add a person to the list of inappropriate people that need training on sexual harassment and how to treat people, please send the TOWN MANAGER.

Day after day, week after week, I watch and hear him yell at everyone around him.  Demeaning those that give their time to this Town.   He goes from hot to cold and changes his mind a lot.  He wants to keep you on edge all the time. I would quit but I like the Town, need the money, and the people.  I pray he leaves and I wish we had a human resource office or someone that was in charge and fair.  I watch the National News and hope that we will have our weinstein outing of this p**.  In the meantime, Stop harassing your employees!

Monument Ride

To a point in the Banner article this week, we already have a Town Green, it's the Bas Relief park, which is going to be redone at considerable expense, thank you very much, .

The tram adds nothing and will sit dormant 8 months of the year and just junk up the park.

If the monument wants to mess up something let him do it on the campground that the quoted person just bought, which should have been put under conservation commission prevue.

Another boondoggle, like Harbor Hill and the Community Center, will the Town never learn!  Spend spend spend and add nothing!
7:05 pm est

"So that misogynists can take back the town!"
Take back the town? They never left. More just keep coming. Provincetown is, and it's such a bore.  And nope, I don't live here anymore. Bye!

The Canteen did get Chapter 91 approval for its seats. Learn what you're talking about before publishing inaccurate, malicious and defamatory comments.
7:00 pm est

Harbor Hill and BOS

I think the year round rental board is realizing next to no one qualifies for Harbor Hill rentals. Lets be grateful that Panagore , Donegan and the rest of the board assured us that they have an exit strategy that we can count on so as not to become a problem for taxpayers.
6:59 pm est

Harbor Hill and BOS

I fear the previous writer may be correct.  I can't think of any teacher, police officer or town hall employee who would want to live in the Harbor Hill dormitory.  The people who might be able to afford it won't want to live there.  And for the people who need housing it will be out of their reach.  It's unfortunate that this wasn't thought out before it was sold to residents and town officials weren't honest with us.
6:58 pm est

Board of Selectmen

How disconnected are they?
It is clear that they only want to help themselves. They cant stop patting themselves on the back for this great purchase. A once in a lifetime opportunity. A one and done. We heard that and much more from our elected leaders. A year later just like the VFW. Empty. Ugh. I was taken with the fact that there is already a sell!plan on paper for harbor hill, the chair stated the specifics are confidential. The taxpayers will pay for this for years to come. The Manor in the making. At least the community center is in the hands of the FINCOM chair and not used like the Town Manager advocated in his housing playbook referenced by Anderson. I guess they are happy.
6:55 pm est

I see the sh*tstorm of stupidity, misogyny and hatefulness toward the poorer members of the community continues unabated. It will be a fine day when the rising seas swallow the toxic waste dump that Provincetown has become. Good luck, Gloria, as your departure is proof that leaving Pee Town is "moving on up"!
6:53 pm est

Mark Silva

My sincere thanks for your touching tribute to Mark Silva. It was so disappointing to note that The Banner, our so-called local newspaper, didn't have the perspicacity to afford Mark the coverage his death merited. It would have  been more than appropriate to have had both Mark Silva and Dr. Wilsa Ryder sharing the front page of The Banner since they both contributed so mightily in the life of Provincetown. It becomes more and more obvious to me at least that The Banner doesn't hae a clue.
Again my sincere thanks.

Harbor Hill et Donegan and Truth

Perhaps the one and done Harbor Hill wasn't really a bargain if the majority of people looking for year round want one bedrooms. Duh! Panagore boasted about the $$$ the Town will make selling them. Let's start the sell process now. Stop this nonsense. Can I please have the name of one nurse, fireman, teacher, DPW worker, or the like wanting to fork over big money to Harbor Hill, our newest Ghetto in the making. Terrible that Donegan is such a politician. The truth evades him

You may be right, but they have already acknowledged that the rents they need to charge are unaffordable for most.  If renters can't afford the rents and are unable to bring in some rent income then what ?  Empty units?

Regarding Harbor Hill

I was at the presentation at the school that night.  A few townspeople voiced their displeasure and concerns regarding people renting out rooms to summer workers.  The Housing Trust listened and said they would relook at that possible policy.

So to all those who keep saying that Rob is going to house workers there etc.  You are wrong!  They are not going to allow that based on the input from the public. The Housing Trust is listening to the public and taking the publics concerns into account.  So why are there people on this blog still pissing and moaning about this?

Town Manager et Hatch

Pangaore  turned off comments on Town Talk because Hatch was so rude to people but Panagore can't yell at his darling.
Instead it's everyone else's job to justify themselves to Hatch.  He is the paramount Town Volunteer.  We should all aspire to be more like him.

I wish there were more Town owned buildings to give to Hatch.

Harbor Hill is the newest Goat F**K the Town thinks is going to magically restore our year round community.

There will be more homeless people across route 6 than there will be year rounders.

We spent millions and millions to make the Town Hall historic only to put a plastic chair in front.  Artist community?

And please, when Creative Commons asks for another $100000 this year let's say YES YES YES.  Because if we needed housing the BOS would have done something about it.  So please stop second guessing the leaders, we need Creative Commons.  Where will I paint?  Where will I copy?  Where will I hatch my ideas?

Mark Hatch has to be kidding me.  They turned chicken coops into housing on Law Street.  You really don't think the Community Center could be housing?  How deluded are you to think that people care what  Michelle says about a project's viability?  Richter was ready to give the community center + gallons to that developer and that developer was going to jump at the chance to turn it into condos.  Do you think that guy was so stupid that he didn't know how to develop the project with the proper gallonage from the town.

You can make up all the shit you want but your half truths and obfuscations masquerading as facts aren't going to persuade anyone that that deal wasn't a ridiculous inside job and a horrible deal for the town.

Who's in Control?

Its too bad that the elitists are controlling our town. The Year round Housing Trust is already being abused by changing it to welcome sometime workers. I and many of the town folk would have said no if they new it was for summer work housing benefitting the canteen and  YIng Lings family dynasty.
Here is what I think
If you need summer workers for your business you should make necessary acccomdations without using the town folk to pad your pockets.
Year Round Housing Trust, it should been called work force housing trust and it SHOULD HAVE BEEN AT OUR OLD COMMUNTIY CENTER on Bradfrd street.

I know as a voter me and my town folk friends are voting no to any misleading articles like the housing trust, the VSNBB, and the Community Center.

Or vote on giving the powers to be any more money as they only misspend it anyway. I wish we had financial conservative people on our boards especially the selectmen.
Chery Andres is spending our tax dollars for summer housing is this why we voted for her. So she can cause our taxes to rise in the name of worker housing. Ugh

at least Loise want affordable housing nit rental housing.

When Ying Ling is up for election Lets think about the direction we want our town to go. Do you really want to house more of Ing LIngs family especially now that he teaming up with Rob Anderson on the restaurant and wine business.
Lets make them richer and more of an elitist group than they already are.
while the rest of try so hard to stay here.

To the Slick and Decisiving Belong the Spoils

just read Town Talk, on Facebook, a social media site, I I can't believe the hatred and hostility that comes from March Hatch. He was abusively telling people if they don't volunteer they shouldn't have a voice in expressing themselves. If the don't volunteer they mean nothing. As a person with a disability I find he representation of our town to be offensive and abusive. If we all benefited from the town AS HE HAS, A TREAUSUREER AND MONEY TAKER, OUR TAXPAYING DOLLARS LIKE THE PRESERVATION FUND RECENTLY RECEIVED MORE OF OUR TAXPAYING MONEY.  I
IF WE ALL BENEFITTED LIKE YOU mark hatch, we would all volunteer. The canteen another volunteer who is grossly benefitting from our tax paying dollars. Now Rob Anderson the TEAR ROUND HOUSING TRUST, has decided its ok to change the words and meaning of the dollars we voted to spend on Harbor Hill is going too house his summer employees, this is so blatant it makes me nauseous, we voted on a year round housing trust not work force housing.we would have used our community center for work force housing however we already handed that over to creative commons, whom has done nothing but collect money with the face of our community center to do so. this is very misleading, we all voted to use this building for housing. as we voted on a year round housing trust. I guess words and votes mean nothing anymore unless you have something to gain.
I think we need a reset on our town and how we cater to those who volunteer, and the rest of us can pay the bill.
I am tired of paying taxes for an elite group of people who have figured out how to abuse the system and get away with it. Wish I was feeding the town manager appraisal and food I could probably get the monument for my private parties, but oh yes of course I will volunteer so I can do so.
Our new VSB logo should be volunteer and you will benefit financially for years to come. or maybe "wash our hand and we will wash yours." unless you disagree and then you will be cast out and all of your town dealings will become difficult from zoning to asking for a permit. because if you say no and disagree with any of these town boards you life will become hell. this town leaders and management have got the act of bullying down. Thats what the town manager is a x lawyer, to bully and change our words into something none of us have agreed upon. Its our way or the highway. Another great town logo for branding.

I will definitely be volunteering now that March Hatch and Rob Anderson, have shown you the financial and personal benefits. OH YEAH don't forget you need to cozy up to the town manager. THEN YOU ARE IN

too bad this is how our tax dollars are being spent.,

Mark Hatch

Nobody works as hard for the town as Mark Hatch.  Nobody.  Just ask him how great he is.  How wonderful.  How selfless.  He's happy to tell you.

Selectmen and the VSB

The VSB is not a regulatory board.

The amount of time spent micromanaging the tourism office and VSB by the Selectmen causes me to question their agenda and motive.

Shame on the Selectmen for sending a very strong message to the community: Do not bother serving on a board. We will micromanage your every decision!

Huckabee et Hatch

Huckabee saying the investigation has nothing to do with the White house is like Hatch saying the Community Center has nothing to do with housing.

Town Manager

HARVEY WEINSTEIN is the Town Manager!

Tom Donegan

TOM is a clueless, entitled, wealthy and saccharine man, all too typical of his "type" that is taking over Provincetown in the guise of "doing good" for the rest of is "hicks" who should look up to his wisdom and paternalism in the guise of "taking our medicine"

No thanks buddy!

Re: Mark Hatch

For hatch to talk about housing is hypocritical at best.  He cares nothing about housing.  He took the community center.  Panagore s buddy.  Two hypocrites

Homeless Issues Continue

Once again, another fire in the woods at the campsite on Rte6 yesterday.  When is the town going to step up to the state and address the matter?

Every morning (in the early hours) if you drive by, you will see a ton of smoke coming from the area of the campsite.  I get it, they are homeless and may even want to be there, but how can this be allowed.

The bathroom situations polluting the pond, the animals are being poisoned and so forth and so on.  How can either the state or the town allow such a potential disaster?

As in the past, the town will say it's state property, until they all vacate and then the town DPW has to dismantle the area...  Then all of a sudden it becomes a town problem.

Sooooo I think most people get the LCP won't fix the town, but it was the one thing the planner was hired to do. She immersed herself into all these other things

Harbor Hill

Keep your eyes on Harbor Hill folks! The tide is building. It's not enough that all townspeople and every taxpayer in this town is going to be subsidizing people with SIX FIGURE INCOMES. But this place is going to be used for summer workers, too. And if that's not enough for you, we're also going to allow the year-round renters to MAKE A PROFIT while we're subsidizing them! Feeling bamboozled yet? Open up them wallets!!
