DEK: A letter from Provincetown

“L’Affaire Sal’s Place: Money and Meanness in the New Ptown."

By Peter Manso

The first thing you notice when you walk into the resurrected Sal’s Place, in the heart of Provincetown’s West End, is the hustle and bustle of a hot restaurant: the place is packed, the noise level is high, and the servers scoot nonstop to and from the close-set tables. There’s a museum-quality Hawthorne and other class art on the walls, but the place still has a fish shack feel, with exposed rafters and the rhythmic slop of the bay against the pilings on which the waterfront building partially sits. And the food—the Brodetto or Zuppa di Pesce that one Facebook blogger raves about as “so wonderful that Marcella [Hazen] herself would flip,”—well, let me tell you, the Zuppa is so sweet, so transporting in its plummy, tomato-y tannic richness as to have made Sal’s the vacation spot’s dining destination of choice near overnight.

All this was pretty much the word around town last summer when the fifty-four year old Sal’s Place reopened under new management. But the food wasn’t the only things people were talking about. There were also whispers that the owner—a single, self-described blue-collar woman who’d originally arrived in Boston from Tipperary at age 17—was at war with her neighbors—four wealthy men, all gay, who had recently bought the abutting properties for summer party pads, and wanted the place dead and shuttered. In fact, depending on who you knew, you might have heard about bouts of property destruction, interminable delays for the restaurant’s opening, and armies of lawyers getting rich on both sides.

As the not-so-secret knock-down-drag-out tumbled into public view, eating there became an almost political act. Now, after simmering all winter, locals in P-Town are waiting for the hostilities to start afresh.

One resident called the quarrel the “worst case of bullying” he’d come across in his 50 years in town. But you could just as well call the fight over Sal’s place a sort of battle for Provincetown’s soul in miniature—a David and Goliath story about whether the artists, fishermen, and non-mainstream types of all persuasions were still welcome in the new Ptown. Or is this haven at the end of the Cape destined to become an exclusive enclave for the rich gay elite?

Re: 350 Bradford Steet

Looks Like 350 Is Back in the News

Not really, it's just our faux newspaper and faux editor Anne Wood trying to create controversy and sell newspapers.
11:57 pm edt

Re:  Pizza and Firemen

The writer obviously has a grudge against Julie or Twisted Sister in general.  If this is all your feeble mind can come up with regarding pizza being given out to the firemen, get a grip on yourself.  You are so quick to find fault, you sound ridiculous and petty.  What did you do to help?  We have a community crisis and you respond with insults and innuendo.  Bravo to you.
11:55 pm edt

The Times are Achanging

There's a lot of change in this town.  The East End, with it's new street, is filled with people.  When was the opening?  How much did we spend?  Where are our elected officials?  How much did we spend?  It is the beginning of a new age.

32 Bradford Street Full Demolition

Does anyone know what is going on at 32 Bradford St.?
They tore down the old big garage/store!
I don't believe they have the permits to do this!!
My understanding is that if you are on Bradford you are in Historic, did they approve this demolition??
Is anyone paying attention!

Re: 350 Bradford Street
Isn't it a conflict of interest that David Nicolau, the Planning Board Chair is also a realtor who is selling these units? Doesn't he stand to make a big payday on selling these Condos that will go for 650K and way above? How is this legal? Concerned Resident

Re: Pizza and Firemen

When you go on FB and encourage people to call in with their credit card to donate pizzas to  firemen it's called marketing.    If you are selling those pizzas at full price you are not donating pizzas, you are running a for profit business.

Call it what it is.

Re: 350 Bradford Street

Looks Like 350 Is Back in the News

surprise? why? This never went to Zoning and it was all placed in the hands of Planning. and have they done decisions like this before? No. It is the general work of zoning but somehow---Zoning never ruled on this major development. And what about Conservation? there is not one tree, one branch, one leaf remaining. Aren't you soooo concerned about landscape and the land and what is growing there?

and about the land and conservation. How could this dune not be a dune? all of it destroyed and undermined, all this land leveled. and this was fine with conservation? Why? It is the destruction of the dunes, of land, of the essence of Provincetown. and this was ruled OK? How?

Look everywhere and you will see problems and more questions than answers. It is a huge hole with questionable actions.

And this is how we welcome visitors? this is the entrance to Provincetown? Tragic.

Difficult Memorial Day Weekend

So many challenges this Memorial Day Weekend. It has not been an easy time for many. May the remaining days be free of tragedies and tough times.

350 Bradford Street

From Banner article about 350 project...'The units will be sold by real estate agents Emily Flaxx and David Nicolau (the chair of the towns zoning board of appeals) of Atlantic Bay Sothebys International Realty.'

Classic Provincetown 'like nowhere else' the Chair of Zoning will be selling units.

anyone know where I can I get a cultural district sticker? cause nothing says cultural like a sticker.
6:44 pm edt

Pizza and Firemen

Just have to ask. How is going on FB and getting people to call in with credit cards to buy a pizza translated into "I am donating" a pie? If you want to make a few pies for the firemen, go and make them and bring them the 100 yards over and give them to them. If someone is buying it for them, then it is not donating, no?

Hopefully someone will open their eyes and figure it out....

"One wonders what kind of shady stunts the Atwood brothers tried to pull to cause the PBG to disavow them in their latest letters to members."

There was no shady stunt so let's not create alternative facts.  During the last marketing campaign one of the pictures included a person who is a registered sex offender.  The PBG board told the then director to remove that person from the picture.  The director did not follow the Board's instructions and as a result was terminated.

"Local kids many times come with local problems. A sense of entitlement, poor work ethic and drama all seem to be part of the norm here for this quaint town. I do hire people from the area, for the most part, but so many local kids over the years have been a problem."

Sorry that you don't want to hear it, but as a business owner I've experienced the same thing.  Not necessarily with kids who went to school here and live here year round, but those who have moved here to party.  Their sense of entitlement and lack of work ethic are obvious.

The 'I moved here with little skills, now give me Housing and pay me a high compensation because I need it to live here' group.

Dr. Marcene Marcoux vs BOS Members

Does anyone know what's going on with the travesty/conspiracy against Dr. Marcene Marcoux? When is the Public Hearing? There appears to be "dirty politics" under this issue,by Government here! Why wasn't the other HDC members sited for trespassing? Why didn't the Town Planner admit she gave permission (which isn't her job in the first place) for Dr. Marcoux to visit the premises? Was it a trap? Why don't people put their egos & politics away & appreciate what contributions are made by serving gratis on committees? No one will want to volunteer for such abuses!!

Absolute bull and you know it. And are you seriously trying to claim that the foreign kids don't cause problems? Try telling that to anyone who's had the experience of working with them. Drama, unreliability, drinking and drug use, laziness, etc. They're all KIDS, whether they're foreign or domestic, they all have the same "problems."

So Andrews is Chair?

Can anyone make you people happy? You have a quality person serving. What are you doing besides mouthing off?

12:28 am edt

"Abstaining Andrews" as Chair!??

Someone has to be kidding with us. Get ready for major hold-ups, problems and baloney with this chair. She has shown she doesn't have the capacity to get along with the decisions of the "boys", abstaining her responsibility to be informed for years. This should be interesting.

Ms. Andrews is all about Ms. Andrews!

Professor Lisa E. Davis in Provincetown

Professor Lisa E. Davis will be reading from her book about Angela Calomiris of Provincetown, who owned Angel's Landing, and was an informant for the FBI. She infiltrated a lot of Leftist organizations, spying on the American Communist Party (CPUSA) during the rabid McCarthy Era, and was in general a stool pigeon. Many lost their jobs because of her, their reputations, their livelihoods, and Angie was shunned by lesbians in NYC's Greenwich Village. She retreated to Provincetown, and never talked about her spy career, her time on the witness stand, her past. She told people she had been a "gofer" for Eleanor Roosevelt, and there was some truth to that.
Ms. Davis will read Friday evening May 19 at the East End Bookstore, 389 Commercial St., Provincetown, 6 p.m.; and at the Provincetown Public Library Saturday, May 20, 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
11:51 am edt

So Andrews is Chair?
It will be fun to watch her condescending attitude towards the others on the board because she feels she so far superior to everyone else.  Will Louise allow Andrews to walk over her?  And how will Andrews continue to abstain on items claiming she didn't have the full information?
11:48 am edt

West End Parking Lot

Has anyone noticed that ONE person has his five vehicles parked in the West End Parking Lot.  A Mercedes Van, Chevy Van, Mercedes SUV,
BMW Station Wagon and an Aston Martin, all with town parking stickers. How is it possible that one person is allowed to take up so many spots.  It is not fair to other residents. How much money does the town lose by not having these spots available for tourists?
11:47 am edt

Re: GreedyTown

I'm not an owner but I can tell you this ... locals and Americans can work the length of the season we have because of school. And it definitely isn't cheaper to hire foreign workers because the amounts paid to lawyers and paperwork more than makes up that difference and then some.

My daughter will have work but most don't want to hire someone who has to leave the beginning of August and she only will because I can supply it to make life easier for a time at my place of employment.
11:41 am edt

Now is your change, grow some "b___s" and confront the abusive man you are reviewing or you hired to run the town, or was it to drive employee's out!

Two Peas in a Pod

Donegan and Dingaling are not capable of looking st the bigger picture.  They cost us 1/2 million with Jaran, a case that could have been settled for 1/10th of the amount.  They have cost us millions with with the police station delay.  They gave away the community center and have let the VFW site sit idle for years.

No leadership, and then you have Andrews who abstains on everything because she doesn't have enough facts.  Note to Andrews, get the damn facts, you being ill-informed benefits no one.

9:48 am edt

Re: GreedyTown

Right on!! Lots of local kids don't bother to even apply to most of the bigger named businesses in town, the more popular restaurants, bars, hotels etc. because the owners already have in mind the idea that they WILL be getting foreign help and never having a first come first employed attitude. My kids would love to work in some of these more popular places and earn higher wages through tips and great hours due to the fact that they live right here, thinking they have first shot at the jobs but NOOOO. Boo hoo to the owners that may have to hire local and pay a bit more. Too bad, so sad.

Access to Beach v Post Office

I Don't Believe the Post Office Can block Access to the Beach

I believe they are under Chapter 91 and thus must allow beach access from commercial Street to the beach. It could be that this manager does not know the law.

Given this, he may not be able legally to lock the gates of the parking lot since that also denies access to the beach and is against Chapter 91 ruling.

Re: Personnel Board and Ann Maguire

Check your facts before you pontificate! Ann Maguire has not been on the Personnel Board for several years.  The town website posts all the boards and members.
10:41 pm edt

Re: GreedyTown

I have to say, the recent Wicked Local article that's going around about local businesses suffering because they can't get their foreign workers this year made me laugh.

The claim that local businesses hire foreigners only after unsuccessfully trying to fill positions with locals is absolute bull and everyone knows it. They hire foreigners because it's cheaper to do so, plain and simple. And that guy who had to cancel trips because he didn't have enough staff to run his business while he's away - BOO HOO! Some of us work YEAR ROUND and NEVER get to take vacation trips. Please spare us your first world problems.

The truth is, this town ran well before all the foreign workers and we can still run fine without them. Business owners may just have to get used to making a little less and paying a decent wage. You know, the way things were before this place became Greedytown.

What Happened?

Our society is going down the drain if the vote means absolutely nothing. If the wrong person wins.....let's vote again until the "right" person gets in. Teaching kids that everyone is a winner is really cringeworthy. When I was growing up there was a winner and a loser. The loser picked himself up and tried harder the next time.

Competitive Edge was healthy. Kids were taught fair play. This everyone is a winner malarky should not be encouraged. Makes the "real" winner feel like their efforts were for naught.

Same with this voting b.s. The winner wins by vote.....not popularity. This is scary to think it can be changed...because your favorite didn't win.
5:15 pm edt

Just You Wait and See

Donegan and Yingling spent years saying the votes weren't there for a police station.   The effectively blocked the station from going to the voters and abstaining Andrews and Anthony were too weak to push for it.

Now finally it goes to the voters and passes overwhelmingly at town meeting and the ballot box.  The Selectmen sitting in front of you cost the town millions of dollars by their holding up the process.  Probably at least $1,000,000 in additional construction costs and millions more over the life of the bond in additional interest costs due to rising rates.  By the time thus project is done the interest rates are guaranteed to be significantly higher.

It will make the $500,000 Donegan and Yingling costs us for the Jaran fiasco look like chump change.

I have nothing against Robert Anthony and. Congrats on your re election . I would like  to see selectman Anthony  more involved with his input and  thoughts . And when a vote is so important and can determine  the  outcome  of someone's  job u can't recuse yourself  all  the time . We need a selectmen to vote and  have his own opinions . So please  in this next term  do not recuse  so often. And vote  your heart and conscious  not what's. Politically  popular or  being  pressured by other board  members . Thank you .

A Critical Observsation

This election tells you how screwed up this town truly is when Anthony, a man who has been less than useless gets re-elected. He has contributed absolutely nothing in the three years he has been there. All he does is say yes to all the special interest groups                                            ! This place makes me F-ing sick!!! And the corruption goes on this town will never change as long as the extreme left is running it!!

Excluded are Cheryl Andrews, Raf and the one who yes recuses himself for Real Estate reasons. So that leaves 2. Yes 2 who have trespassed. Figure out who they are and the  whole puzzle pulls together.
5:59 pm edt

Please remember under the so called "leadership" of Donegan, Richter and Ding a Ling, we had to pay out over $500,000.00 to our ex Police Chief. How much is the Marcene lawsuit going to cost, wouldn't you love to wipe that smirk of Ding a Lings face at some point! What a piece of work, he hasn't a clue on how to conduct a meeting nor take the "heat" as an elected official. He is a coward and always will be along with his cousin who didn't have the guts to VOTE yes or NO at the last meeting.

I hope everyone will join me tomorrow with writing Wayne Martin in for selectman. I think we can all agree who we have in there now is not working out and do not have the towns best interests in mind. We need a person with backbone and integrity to stand up to the TM and some others that are screwing up our town.

Please tell me this is a joke? Why didn't Mr. Martin follow the required process to complete his candidacy? If he can't do that, he can't be our next Selectmen.

Not one mention of tomorrow's Town election on Town Talk.  2 of 5 of his bosses and not a peep.   If the blue chair was up for re-election he'd be all over it.  A disgrace!

"So... Let me get this straight.... 2 people supposedly trespassed on the property at 99 Commercial Street and only one gets punished? How does that happen? Oh. I know, Yingling and Donegan doesn't like the one, so we now try to get rid of her. I think it's time for Yingling and Donegan to go.. Sounds like targeting to me...."
Perhaps, you should re evaluate this matter and come back when you have all the facts of the case. That property has been nothing but a nightmare since the project began. It sounds to me that perhaps the owners of that location have an in with two selectmen and they too do not like Marcene, so that's who the target will be... Let's hope this is not going to be another law suit the town has to pay out in error....

We don't have a Town Manager that really knows how to run and operate a community. Truth be Told

There are very few people in this town who cannot be impugned in some way, shape or form.

Maxine Notaro is one of those people.

If she is calling you out, you better believe you are on the wrong side of this.  I'm talking to you, Eric.  And you Tom.

I'm hoping that Gordon and/or Louise can put a stop to this nonsense fast and that Cheryl will be the new Chair.  Time to have an adult in charge.

RFe: Blue Chair

So happy to see the blue plastic abomination removed from the front of our historic and beautiful town hall. Not sure the beach is appropriate location for it. Whomever is responsible should consider maybe relocating it to in front of or behind the public bathroom near the parking lot if we must keep it somewhere. Tourists can pose with the shark and the chair.

Re:Have you heard the latest joke?

How can you publish something that's so full of lies? Has this blog joined the Trump Administration? Are these alternate facts? I know the people who did this, was involved in the process, and I attended town meeting. So let's start with the "we voted to SELL...". Seems to me, someone stood up and read that article in its entirety and it did NOT say to SELL the building. It authorized the BOS to sale AS AN ADVISORY. I was there. I heard him read it. Saying we voted to SELL it is an "alternative fact". Another "alternative fact" is saying that someone offered to lease the old Community Center for 99 years. STOP. NO. THE TOWN put the lease OPTION out there for EVERYONE. NO BIDDER ASKED FOR THAT. In fact, if he had bothered to read the original documents, he would have seen that they propose a THIRTY YEAR LEASE. The 99 year lease was adopted by the BOS NOT any of the bidders. Also there has never been, nor was there this time, ANY BID FOR HOUSING, EXCEPT dorm-style summer worke!
r housing, and the reasons that was rejected were also spelled out at town meeting. There have been FOUR attempts to dispose of this building...the first was dorm-type housing which, btw, the terms on were LESS beneficial to town than here, and it fell through because there was to be a deed restriction (because we all know it would have "failed" and then been converted to condos), the second attempt for housing only had ZERO bidders, the third was Winslow Farms that failed at town meeting, and this was the FOURTH and had three bidders, one which dropped out. Can you at least publish THE TRUTH, and not "alternative facts"? You can be for or against something, but to allow people to play the Trump game in this town is appalling.

Marcene Marcoux/ Eric Yingling

I posted the comment that appeared at 7:35 am Sunday over two weeks ago regarding Yingling simply wanting to flex his muscles and show everyone the "power" he has as a selectman when he goes after a committee appointee. That post was submitted LONG before the meeting where the little punk showed his true colors as he smirked at Clarence in regards to Clarence's defense of Marcene. He's a gutless punk with little or no spine, is on a personal vendetta and has nothing in mind for the town other than an ill conceived plan to be "in control" when in fact, he controls nothing, probably not even his own bodily functions. Do us all a favor Dingaling, resign like you threatened to. You mean nothing in reality to the forward progress of the town and have less than zero skills when it comes to leadership. Even your cousin Raf had the testicular fortitude to realize when to get out as the walls were closing in around him, using of course the old "personal reasons" for his departure. I !
guess he's the only selectman that has ever had kids? WRONG!! He's the only one with kids that realized he couldn't handle the job. Get out Dingaling and go live with your girlfriend in the affordable housing SHE lives in and you glom onto.

BoS vs Marcoux

This is a very sad situation for all involved and sounds more political than anything. The Zoning Board of Appeals, Conservation Commission, Historic District Cimmission and the Planning Board have always entered onto a property to do either individual or in pairs site visits when dealing with an application before them, as three or more constitutes a quorum and, therefore, needs to be noticed out. They also do inspections while the property is under construction or upon completion to make sure the contractor(s) or property owner adhere to what was approved by that particular board. No permission from any property owner was ever required or sought in my capacity as recording secretary as far back as the 70's and then as Permit Co-ordinator for many, many years to the ZBA, PB, and HDC and for a while to ConsCom until they finally hired a Conservation Agent.  To futhter state, the Chair or Vice-chair run the boards. It's their board and the Permit Co-ordinator or Planner are there as staff to answer any questions the board members might have that are directed to them. Town Counsel had advised, the board members are the sitting members and they are the ones who write the decisions and are the ones who would be named in a law suit, should there be one, and not staff. Therefore, staff should not be participating in discussion on hearings or applications unless called upon by the board member.

You will always have some applicants who are pleased and some who are not no matter what board they are in front of. What I read in the paper, Ms. Marcoux's own board members were there in her support. Therefore, shame on the Selectmen for their conduct, if in fact they remove her from the board. Who are you listening to...never mind, I already have a good idea.

On another subject, let's not forget about ethics violations.....most board members are very mindful of that but I know a former board member who was not. So much for the State Ethics exam Board members are given.

Again, on another note, sorry to hear Doug Johnstone, Town Clerk is retiring. Hope it's not because of what people are writing in. That's definitely one position you have to have some knowledge of.

Oh, and by the way, I don't give a rats ass who does not like my input. I tell it like it is.

Re: Town Manager

This deserves a second reading. Thanks to the original poster:

"The Town Manager is away for three weeks; having sown the seeds of discontent with his inappropriate behavior learned in several other places where he was ejected from, he must come home to accountability."

I would add, allowing the public shaming of a town board volunteer, and a knowledgeable one at that, is simply a heinous and rookie move. Soon will come the day when DP is booted out, laughingly saying it was his 'choice.'
