What Ever Happened?

"When I was a kid the carnival used to come to town. Was a great time with rides and attractions. What ever happened to that?"

That went out with the Toursim Director many years ago....

Dan Hoort

I have heard for more than a long time that Hoort was "a heart attack waiting to happen."

Thank goodness that didn't happen!

Re: Bikers

I ride my bike up and down Commercial Street 20 times per day. It is my primary form of transportation, next to walking.  To clump all people on bikes together as a single unit is just plain stupid. One poster stated that most bikers don't follow the rules and/or feel entitled.  Another stupid comment. Most of us are just trying to get from one place to another without issue.  I watch in horror as some people on bikes speed down Commercial at high rates of speed and those jerks pay no attention to requests to slow down.  I have spoken to offenders individually to no avail.  Regarding pedestrians, right of way shouldn't equate to stupidity.  Walking blindly into moving vehicles is never a good idea.  Pushing children in strollers into the street without looking is not only crazy, but dangerous and possibly life threatening.  Walking dogs on extended leases is an invitation to disaster.  People are lulled into a false sense of security on Commercial St.  I don't think there is any easy answer.  I watch at the intersection at the Governor Bradford where the traffic cop tries desperately to control street traffic.  I see pedestrians walk blindly crossing the street even with the officer blowing their whistle telling them to stop.  It's as though all the rules of normal life as tossed aside when people get here.

Re: Where is Panagore? - Waiting For Godot

Ultimately the productivity of the Town Staff and hiring decisions rest with the Town Manager.  He's been here about 10 months, let's give him the chance to do his job.

Town Planner, Finance director, Housing Specialist?   Give him a chance to evaluate what we have and make changes if needed.  If an incompetent BOS stays out of his way and lets him do his job he can do a good job for us.

Re: Bikers

Bottom line pedestrians have the right of way above all on commercial street (by STATE law). People that love bikes are the first one's to step up and condemn distracted people walking, but just what do people expect after wanting tourists to shop on the front street? You can't have it both ways, and by far I've seen worse behavior on the part of bicycle riders riding far faster than conditions warrant. Bicycles are bound by law to follow the rules of the road (same as cars)but most don't, and feel that they are above all that. It shows in the posts here.

Re: Housing Specialist

Perhaps Because our Housing specialist is still only doing what she did before

half-time work. Now she gets paid full time to do half time work and she is not a good advocate for those who need affordable housing but an advocate for developers like ted Malone. Just look at her record. Look at the terrible deals done under her "reign."

Re: Bikers

A few years ago, during the 4TH of July fireworks, Commercial Street was shut down to vehicular traffic. Bikes and people only. A lot of people thought that was a great idea. Why not do it again and more often, like Saturday nights all the time??

Re: Bikers

Bikers Going two ways in opposite Direction on one side and then bikers on the other side

and people walking and cars--this is not going to end well! We can't have it all! We need to restrict some of this traffic, not encourage even more when we don't have the street room for this. It is not being well thought out!

"Why not try and figure out what the f@#! the town planner and town housing "specialist" really are doing-basically wasting our tax dollars. Time to clean house and eliminate these two unnecessary positions and let the assistant manger do something useful."

I'm guessing most other towns have a town planner.  Whether ours is worth the money or not I can't say.

The housing specialist at $115,000 a year is another story.  I read Sarah Peake's Facebook post congratulating Provincetown, Truro and Wellfleet on being awarded a community grant.  She specifically congratulated the grant writer on the successful appliclation, the grant writer was not our housing specialist.  That use to be part of her job.

I hear that instead of looking at other positions it's been decided to not fill the finance director position.  That puts us back to the days of Bergman, I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Re: Bikers

"A biker was going at such high speed to wards the West end, that to avoid a group of pedestrians crossing the street on his left, he maneuvered his bike to the opposite direction, his right. A van was parked there, and he hit it with his moving bike."

Yeah, here's another one: A bunch of people were walking in the middle of the road while texting and walked into a bike/car/wheelchair/toddler.

And another: A parked car pulled out into the street without looking and hit a pedestrian/bicyclist/dog.

And another: A woman walking her dog on a leash that stretched all the way across Commercial St. tripped a pedestrian who then fell onto a skateboarder who in turn crashed into a baby stroller that contained a handicapped dog.

There are plenty of Commercial St. unsafe behavior scenarios that play out every day in high season, involving folks using all modes of transportation, but for some reason, every year, people want to blame everything on bicyclists. I'm sorry but that's just not realistic. Anyone who lives here knows there are MANY distracted people on Commercial St. every day who behave in an unsafe manner. Stop trying to scapegoat bicyclists. It's unfair and untrue.

Re: Portuguese Festival Parade

Portuguese festival Parade was a great parade, but the people are terrible. They walk in between and hold everything up, why do they bother to come? There should be something done about the mess they cause, most places rope off the sides or have people standing along the sides to hold them back. You stand there waiting for the rest of it too long. It's a waste of time to go down town. It's such a wonderful parade.

NRA Donations

Paul Ryan received $36,800 in campaign contributions from the NRA.  This figure doesn't include individual NRA contributors. His actions this week are, and will continue to be predictable.

In the U.S. House of Representatives, congressmen in 45 states have accepted campaign contributions from the NRA. The 5 states below, as well as the District of Colombia are the only ones with $0 in NRA campaign contributions:

Connecticut
D.C.
Delaware
Hawaii
Massachusetts
Rhode Island

It's understandable why all of the Republican congressmen refused to vote on any gun-related bill, went on recess until July, and are having a nice cocktail by their pool.  They have received steady donations from the NRA lobby.

It's all in this graphic of Washington Post:

Re: Teeny Tiny Houses

Tiny Houses and Zoning

MAJOR changes to the Zoning By-Laws would need to take place.
The minimum size for a buildable lot is 5,000 square feet. I believe Coastal Acres is in a Res1 district. You can have one dwelling unit by right. You can have a second dwelling unit with a special permit. You CANNOT have more than 2 dwelling units on a 5,000 square foot lot.
As the current by-laws are written, you are going to have tiny houses with REALLY big yards.

"For those of us that just want to get by and enjoy life should be able to have an option like a small home made available to us."

I agree!  With all the rich people buying up this town, let them supplement our affordable living accommodations.  There is nothing wrong with helping the less fortunate.  Don't get high and mighty because we may not be as ambitious and as cut-throat as you, but at least support our right to have a small piece of the pie.  I'm at a point in my life where I don't want to work full time just to cover rent, so give people like me options.  Small houses would be great to be made available in an affordable manner so we can live in the town we love for part of the year.  It is not like we are asking tax payers to cover us in the winter months when we would be on our own to find a place to live.

The Absence of Town Manager is A Presence

He is absent and almost without influence--there is no gravitas. I also find that since his return from a misplaced vacation--he is the safety chief and this was Memorial Day Weekend--that he is simply a shadow, a feather blowing in the summer breeze.

It is rather odd but I too sense this absence, this lack of presence.

I totally agree unless your blind you have to see that these "200 tiny houses" are just going to be summer condo retreats for the well to do much like Days cottages in Truro in no way will you ever see these be low income or affordable housing. This has to be one of the worse things that has happened to Ptown "a town that counts on tourism dollars" in a half a century and some of you people are already swallowing it hook, line and sinker and besides I believe the understanding was that property was to remain operating as a campground only part of it was perhaps going to be developed, at least that's what the Banner said.

So much for a cheap place for all the families and such who called Coastal Acres home for the summer for years and brought in much needed tourist dollars for the past 45 years of so. I can't believe I'm the only one that sees  the development of that camp ground is going to make the developer richer and the rest of us that depend on tourism to make most of our yearly income to lose money. I'm sure our town officials will make out ok though for the allowing of this development they will probably say it's for the good of the community and bend over backwards to accommodate this travesty to our livelyhoods. Once again it never ceases to amaze me how thick the people of this town can be.

Oh man, this is brave. Someone actually admitting to, and daring to live a slacker life. Think about all those who (except for the lucky 1%) sacrificed, skimped and saved, sweated blood, all to own a home in Provincetown. There's a smug poster on this blog who yammers on about how cozy his life is, and how he earned his house and you didn't, blah, blah, blah. And then, along come the tiny houses and blows it all up! Imagine! Someone admitting they'd go to warmer climes in the winter...while he's stuck in a home he can barely afford.

Re: Teeny Tiny Houses

I'd rather live in a "shed" or a "prison cell"  home if it is affordable.  I want to live in this town and if that is the best I can do, then I'll take it.  I appreciate that the town leaders are looking for ways to accommodate people like me.  Not everyone is ambitious and makes a good salary. For those of us that just want to get by and enjoy life should be able to have an option like a small home made available to us.  Even if they make them available for only part of the year, we could then find places in warmer climates to spend the winter.

Where is Panagore? - Waiting For Godot

Has anyone besides myself noticed the absence of the Town Manager. Since his disastrous Town Meeting performance and his return from vacation he  has  not  made his presence felt. It would appear that with the stepping down of Tom Donagen he is at a loss.

With the leaving of Finance Director , Dan Hoort, he seems to have acquiesced his  operational responsibilities to the Town Planner and Assistant Town Manager.  He has permitted the Town Planner to flit about and interject herself in matters far beyond her purview.

She has yet to produce the semblance of a Local Comprehensive Plan, for which she was assigned  the highest priority. Her actions to me indicate that she has  an attention deficit problem, which never  concludes
a specific project and always requires the services of others. Maybe she is incapable of performing this task and it will  be another year before anything will be forthcoming. It's like wating for Godot.

Panagore has allowed the Town Planner to interfere with matters concerning Conservation, Fire Safety, Chapter 91, Health, Traffic, Personnel, Community Development, Inspection, Permitting. She has interfered with matters which are  the sole responsibility of the duly authorize Building Commissioner whose authority  is derived from Massachusetts State Law. He has  allowed her to become the proponent for building developers working in opposition  to the welfare of the town, in conjunction with building her own political group, which operates frequently in opposition  to the established policies of  the Town Manager.

He has permitted this town staff  person to operate under circumstances  that are at best questionable and at worse blatant conflicts of  interest

I predict that the actions of the Town Planner  will result in several law suits against the town and the  inaction of the Town  Manger will only result in the further compounding of  legal issues.

Well, here's my two cents the bikers' situation.

I had made a full stop at a stop sign. I had a blinking light to indicate I was turning right.  He passed me on the right at a very high speed, and took the right hand turn at the same time I was.

Teeny Tiny Houses

TEENY TINY HOUSES

How sad that people will have no choice but to try to live in a teeny tiny house that is equivalent in size to several prison cells.

This is what it comes down to..and the developers keep making the money. A community made up of teeny tiny houses the size of which the rest of have on our property which we call a Shed.

Where do you keep you boots and rain coat and winter clothes and then your summer clothes and a recliner or a couch or a coffee table or your washer and dryer.

Reduced, circumscribed lives is what these residents have in store for them. What happens when one of you gets sick? no other place to sleep?

Think about these things first--before you use our Taxpayer money to build what the developers are pushing you to build. Teeny Tiny houses the size of a dorm room! How sad.

Police Invisibility On the Street

I never see police officers on commercial street unless they are driving in the car with the windows rolled up. What is the point of that? Get out of the car and greet people and show the public that you are here to serve and protect!

Police Invisibility On the Street

Provincetown Traffic Coordinators

The traffic coordinators this year take the cake. I was walking down Commercial Street a few days ago and three of them were standing on the sidewalk corner throwing the bull and made people walking go around them! This has got to be the worse year, we actually pay them? Remember when Donald could do this job by himself

Biking Complaint

Yesterday I was brushed by a speeding biker who then almost hit two little boys who were crossing the street in front of Spiritus. A more serious problem is, when a car signals for a right turn and is passed by a speeding biker.
My question to speeding bikers is, how will you feel if you seriously hurt or kill a person with when you are speeding?

Massachusetts (2016), the Supreme Court reiterated its earlier rulings that "the Second Amendment extends, prima facie, to all instruments that constitute bearable arms, even those that were not in existence at the time of the founding" and that its protection is not limited to "only those weapons useful in warfare".[15]

Wrong Again Liberals!!!

More Traffic Enforcement Needed

Rt 6 is a mess because someone could not follow the rules and caused a crash. We should have more officers enforcing these laws.  These traffic snarled could be avoided if people did not speed and tailgate. Remember to keep a car length  for every ten miles per hour. This not only allows for better braking it also facilitates easy merging at lane drops.

Re: I Do Blame the NRA

Look, I think that people have no need for weapons that are made for war, but when I read stuff like this:

"They are a danger to all of us. they should be held accountable for all the deaths and like car manufacturers, gun makers should be sued."

It makes me cringe.  People do not sue car makers when cars are used as intended and do not have design or productions flaws that lead to an accident.  When guns are legally sold and are manufactured and designed properly, there is no legal basis to sue.  However, it is those cowardly elected officials that allow them to be sold legally that deserve the scorn.  The second amendment allows weapons to be used for militia purposes not for any other purpose.

I Do Blame the NRA

They are the sick supporters of guns, guns, guns--be they assault rifles, be they militarized killing machines and they are funded by the manufacturers of guns.

They are a danger to all of us. they should be held accountable for all the deaths and like car manufacturers, gun makers should be sued.

Consider that the NRA also stops all research on gun related injuries. they have stopped all such research for years.

They are dangerous and should be called to account for their terrible misdeeds and funding of guns, guns, guns.

From Wayne Martin, to one of Wayne's pals.

This sounds a little suspicious, why don't you tell us what department what day and time it was and where the stop took place and what the officer looked like. That way I can check on that story because no officer has any business bringing up my name unless I'm involved in the incident. It's a little strange that you had contact with this local officer and have no way of identifying him or is it that you are not willing to give us any real information about the stop?

What a stupid comment.  Why ask here if something is true?  Who here is an authority?

The FinCom has no legal say in "projects".  Read the Town Charter if you really are interested in knowing the extent of the FinCom responsibilities.  The FinCom DOES NOT "LOOK OUT FOR THE TOWN FINANCES".  This is not part of their job.  They ONLY advise town meeting on articles that effect finances and administer the Reserve Fund.  Some would act as if they had greater powers, but nowhere is it written legally that they do.

So stop with the foolish rumor spreading and do a little research before you spout off.

All this griping about getting speeding tickets.  Are you above the law?  Drive the posted speed limits and you should not have a problem.  Typical of how entitled many people in this town feel.  Time you realized that the world does not revolve around you.  It is time you take responsibility for your own actions and stop looking for scapegoats.  If you are going over the speed limit the police are doing their job and stopping you.  You do not deserve our sympathy, so stop whining about how tough you have it.

To the Board of the PBG.  You need to act and appoint a different representative to the VSB.  It is not a vote against an individual, but a vote for your membership.  No one business in town should have two representatives on a seven member board.

I wouldn't say it was sour grapes as much as certain businesses sucking up all the oxygen during the so-called theme weeks. Theme weeks were/are created to play to a certain type of tourist, while for others, it signals what weeks to avoid. Like Bear Week. Still, if niche weeks were limited, one wonders if it would be less exhausting overall for the town, and a more diverse crowd would appear.

We keep repeating the same narrative and offering and broadcasting the same sympathies that are worthless if no action is taken to stop the next tragedy.

Guns are the problem and the NRA needs to be seen for what it is: a killing machine, a profit-driven industry to sell, sell, sell dangerous instruments of death.

What did You Expect? the so-called $30,000 Grant was Always going to Be an Opening for More Ticketing

for stalking, for fake pull-overs, for ticketing residents and tourists for going over 2 miles the speed limit. Truro has been well-knowns for this type of police abuse and now it is spreading like a disease throughout Wellfleet, Eastham and Provincetown. because now they all have license to go after everyone.

this has nothing to do about true enforcement or even drugs. It is about increasing revenues and increasing the arrogance of too many police officers who gain respect from excess ticketing.

It should have been seen from the beginning as what it actually is. and we will all face more of this throughout the summer and fall.

There is no celebration here of this "grant." It is a pretense for excessive ticketing and increasing revenues from stopping you and me and many of us.

Re: Regionalization of Lower Cape Police Forces

Takakjians and his troopers are at it again!

The latest incident evolves a older women who works at our Methodest church who was followed by a Truro cruiser maned by a 51 year old rookie cop by the name of Tom Roda into town ticketed and towed right from the church parking lot. First off it is not lawful to have a vehicle towed from private property with out the consent of the property owner. It is well known that Takakjian and his troops follow their own laws, even the tow truck driver has been outspoken it this matter saying it was not right what they did to this women. This is the same women who has had a three month long battle with Takakjian and his troops over giving her bogus tickets and have been harassing her, she has been found not responsible in court for these violations and that's when the harassment really started. This women had gone to the papers and had made numerous phone calls to the AG's office about the harassment and the treatment she received by the Truro police before this latest incident. Also I would invite people to look up on line Takakjian's Mental Heath initiative where he plans to have people evaluated and possibly committed who have had issues with the police to prevent possible further problems. Yes its right out of a Tom Cruise movie "Minority Report"! This is a very dagerous man with very disturbing ideas who should be stopped immediately or at the very least told that he is not going to enforce his trannical policy's and directives in our town and we do not tolerate harassment of our citizens by police from any town.

NRA - Just Say No!

Assault Weapons Belong only on a Battlefied--not in Our Cities

I think you're making a great point. This business leader isn't just a bully at VSB meetings. He's a bully in so many of his interactions with people here in town. Everything that isn't geared at supporting his business he has a problem with. I think it's very sad, because in a small community like ours, business owners like him are leaders -- leaders who have the power to set the tone for the rest of town. He has been one of the folks at the top of the food chain for many years now, and his toxicity and self-centeredness has definitely trickled down into many parts of life here in Provincetown. I wish other, more community-oriented town and business leaders would take him on and knock him down a peg. I applaud the town manager for sticking up to him.

VSB Bully?

One of the big problems with the VSB is that you have two people from the same business serving on that board.  The owner always pushes (demands) for marketing/advertising that benefits his business.  And with one of his employees on the board as well their marketing is skewed toward the clientele that patronizes his business.

I was told the new town manager noticed this business owner acting like a bully and trying to push all marketing to benefit his business.  He insisted that their meetings now be held at town hall and that they be taped so his tantrums and demands would be public.

If you walk around through life with this attitude, it's no wonder you aren't greeted with friendly smiles. Let me ask you: did the post office staff do their job? Did they perform their duties?

Were you turned away? Did they tell you "no mail for you, you're not a townie?"

All they are required to do is their job. They don't have to kiss your butt, smile, make you feel important, etc. And for the record, I'm a part time resident and the post office staff has never been anything but kind, courteous, professional and yes, friendly to me.

Town Hall Parking for Town Hall Business

Workers shouldn't be Parking at town Hall: They should have to park in the main parking lot

It makes no sense to fill all these spots with town employees. Park in the main lot and walk. There is no need to lower their rates. You moved out of town--few live here--and that is the price you pay for being non-residents.

Town hall spots should be for town hall business.

Re: Enough is Enough

Talk about barking up the wrong tree!

If you're going to the Truro selectmen for answers to the police department, much like posting in here, nothing will be done. Even I remember reading where the police and fire in Truro are now under the direction and control of the town manager. You can complain to them but they can't do anything unless she decides to do something.

But I would keep complaining because like the Jarran incident, the one incident that got him on the hot seat wasn't the first time someone complained. Time and time again and finally, one of the complaints had merit and the selectmen/TM did something about it. (of course in  the end it was all a huge failure but hey, he's gone!)

Re: Provincetown Post Office

"Well, I am shocked to read all this negativity about our Post Office workers."

There is no need for the postal workers to treat anyone rude I including summer / part time residents.  Maybe Fulltime residents staff recognizes gets "special" treatment.  Their transactions are probably basic.  When PT residents come in, it may be about tracking the status of misdirected mail, which might be frustrating.  The staff needs to do their job and treat us ALL with respect and be professional.  If they are unhappy in their jobs, there are many of us that would very much like to become a federal employee.  Be thankful you have a job that has retirement benefits.  No need to be cranky or rude to anyone.

Re: Provincetown Post Office

"If you have been treated with attitude and feel it is a problem try communicating with the source first."

I don't believe it is my attitude, as I try to be as pleasant as possible.  I understand the job can be stressful and many of the customers can be rude / abrasive, but when I receive an "attitude" as soon as I say hello, then it sets the tone for the whole interaction.  Yes, some may have a positive experience, but many people I have talked to, agree with me.  That was why I responded to the post.  If the PO workers would make an effort to be pleasant, then there will be a positive experience for everyone!  There is no need to report this to the Post Master General if the workers could make a small effort.

What difference what time of day it Is when citizens rights were violated! and just so you know we're taking about day light hours  and it shouldn't matter if it's 2am or 2 pm our rights don't cease to exist after the sun goes down! The Truro selectmen have a long standing policy of not doing anything about police misconduct complaints, people are simply told to seek legal remedy. When has Truro ever done anything to one of their
police officers the only officers that are forced out are the officers that refuse to follow unlawful orders like         and          !  The reason why we are posting these incidents on here is to inform the taxpayers that we should never consider regionalization with the TPD as long as Takakjian remains chief and these problems still exists!

Re: Provincetown Post Office

Our post office staff (counter staff as well mail carriers)is absolutely incredible, always helpful and willing to go the extra mile.

The customers are sometimes the problem, I have witnessed  customers who are outright nasty to the postal office and express their anger on the staff who are usually not responsible for the a postal system problem.

Factor in the incredible added volume from seasonal workers and tourists each year and it oftentimes impossible for the staff to handle the load on a given day.

Our carriers go out to deliver mail in all adverse weather conditions, many times when I would not even think of venturing out.

The postal management has secret shoppers who constantly monitor and score the quality of service in each postal office.

The big secret in our Provincetown postal office is the high turnover with the top Postmaster position.

The position has experienced incredibly high turnover since Tom Graham retired 12 years ago and the postal staff is left holding the bag most of the time.

They are the continuous thread year after year which provides continuity of good service.

The current postmaster is from Brewster, need I say more.

Take a trip to a metropolitan post office to encounter the reality of postal service today and you will come back and thank each and every one of our dedicated postal staff.

They are the true unsung heroes.

Thank you Peggy Dahill who is essentially running the post office without the credit or pay!

I pay attention to the speed limit, but will admit to sometimes going over by as much as 5 mph.  You know what?  I've never been stopped once anywhere on the Cape.  You are against the police stopping you?  Use common sense when driving.

I go to the post office on a somewhat irregular basis and have never had anything, but a positive interaction with the staff.  You think it's possibly because I treat them as human beings and treat them as I expect to be treated?

Probably two sides to every story.

What a sad commentary on an empty life.

Re: Enough is Enough

Truro's yellow lab drug dog was in Ptown today it was sighted on Conwel St at 4:18 pm. So everybody knows it is not legal for the police to search your vehicle with or without a drug dog useless they can reasonabley articulate probable cause. It is also a violation of your Constitutional rights to be detained unless they can reasonably articulate a crime that you are suspected to have committed. You do not have to answer questions or consent to any searches, if the officers say they have a right to search and or hold you against your will without them saying what crime they suspected you of committing call the state police and then advise them that you are going audio and video them during the whole interaction until a state cop shows up. No your rights what is happening in these four towns is illegal and we don't have to give up our rights because we have week town leaders that are to afraid to put a stop to it.

Well, I am shocked to read all this negativity about our Post Office workers.  I am there weekly to mail out packages and, literally, have NEVER experienced any of the things people are talking about.  Maybe it's because I say hello to the person who waits on me and smile when I do so.  Maybe it's because I ask how their day is going, especially when they looked overwhelmed with the nutty customers they deal with on a consistent basis.  Maybe it's because I don't bitch when I get to the counter about how long the line was or the fact that the parking lot is always full (as if they have control over that). Maybe it's because I don't treat them the way service employees are often treated, you know, that way people treat you when you're the hired help. Maybe it's because those complaining don't have even the basic social skills to understand what I am writing.  I really don't know our Postal Worker's names, but I do know they have always been kind and helpful when I visit and I!

Re: Enough is Enough

The simple solution to your problem is to not break traffic laws. Keep your license, insurance and registration current, do not exceed the speed limit, keep your can mechanically safe(tires brakes lights exhaust ect...) and you will not be stopped. These laws were created by the people because of problems created by people that broke these laws. There is no such thing as an "accident"  collisions on the highways are caused by people failing to obey the laws. The men and women of the area police departments are risking their lives daily to keep you safe. Just this week another officer was killed by a drunk driver while doing her job.

I have lived here for 8 years initially had aPO Box and several address changes and have NEVER  had any issues with the Postal Employees. Perhaps the naysayers need to look in the mirror. Maybe they feel entitled or something. The Postal Service has some pretty strict guidelines so perhaps these complainers are not being coddled.  Entitlement seems to run rampant in this town. Parking rules are ignored all of the time especially handicapped parking at private businesses where these people know the police can't enforce the parking laws.  If you have been treated with attitude and feel it is a problem try communicating with the source first. Re: Enough is Enough

According to a selectman, they had zero input and control over the four-police task force (over their towns participation). It was presented to them as a done-deal, in fact they had only heard talk of it before that. Provincetown people should care, as this is a roving force (and your police force is part of it) and you still have to drive through these other towns. Many unanswered questions, of liability, wear and tear on cars, shift coverage for towns caught short (read: towns paying overtime needlessly where otherwise they would have the personnel to cover,  because their officers/cars are dedicated to this task force). That first post was most certainly exaggerated, but there was about 47 traffic stops, mostly older town people that morning.

Chief Golden himself stated that "It's just not hammering with tickets" but it appears to be leading to just that.Keep in mind, with the National park rangers being sworn in as special police officers, and the roaming State Police you could have as many as nine-ten cars and multiple officers in the same town at the same time. People need to know that this is going on, and be encouraged to ask questions to the towns, especially if they have felt they've been treated badly. and that's what this page is suppose to be about.

Re: Provincetown Postmaster

"The Postal Service does NOT receive Government funds, they are a self sufficient business. They have to make a profit to survive."

Not so much.  The USPS lost a whopping $15.9 billion dollars in 2012, followed by $4.8 billion and $5.3 billion in 2013 and 2014, respectively.  No final figures for 2015 yet, but more big losses are expected.

In addition, they receive substantial subsidies from the government, like these:

Laws that bar any other shipping service from delivering mail and packages directly to residential and business mailboxes. Former Treasury undersecretary Robert Shapiro estimates that this gives the Post Office a $14 billion annual boost.  USPS itself estimates this is worth $5 billion.

The Post Office is exempt from state and local property and real estate taxes, along with other burdens like tolls, vehicle registration fees, and parking tickets. These exemptions save the USPS $2.18 billion per year.  No real "self-sufficient" businesses get these exemptions.

The Postal Service borrows from the U.S. Treasury at highly-subsidized interest rates. It currently borrows $15.2 billion at a rate of 1.2%. Without this access, a real business would be paying some $450 million per year more in interest.

All this is easily found online.  So actually the original poster was correct, taxpayers do subsidize the USPS. A lot.

Re: Provincetown Postmaster

It might also interest the person who thinks that their taxes pay the salaries or anything else to do with the USPS. The Postal Service does NOT receive Government funds, they are a self sufficient business. They have to make a profit to survive. Your taxes have nothing to do with their performance standards, they do not report to you or depend on you!(your taxes, that is). Your taxes pay for the military, complain about that!

The posts about our "rude" postal workers are ridiculous. I've been a year-round resident for years and frequent the post office, sometimes two or three times a week. All of the workers are friendly, patient and provide excellent customer service. My guess is, the person who wrote complaining of being treated rudely, probably did something to warrant that treatment. Treat people with kindness and respect and it will usually come back to you. We are lucky to have the great, hard working crew of people who work at our post office.

New Restaurants/Stingy pours

Two new east end restaurants (Strangers and Saints, and Spindlers) are incredible additions to the restaurant scene in Provincetown.  I commend the owners of both places for a quality renovation. The energy is great at both places, and I believe both will be popular.   My only suggestion for both is to give a more generous pour on your drinks.   The pours are very stingy at both places, which is particularly embarrassing given the whole price you each are paying for liquor.   The bartenders at Spindlers were hyper focused on an imaginary line in the wine glass.  In the long run, both places will make more profit, not to mention tips, if the pours are more generous.

Switch out Hillary for Peake, Washington for the MA State house and what you've got is another rabid misogynistic schmoe spouting off.

Poor Policy and Management

OH, so true; it takes three years to be able to change a window in this town in the historic district, sad to say. Yet, people of their own accord have chosen a path of their making and all of the preaching, and good intentions and a mother's, father's and sibling's tears won't deter them from their chosen path.

There are social, governmental organizations out there that help people at the drop of a hat. However, if the citizens in question don't want their help, the powers that be won't force it upon them.

Unfortunately, there is a mind set in this town because people are known to each other and the powers that be don't want to rock the boat.

In Manhattan, the gentleman who walks out of an office building and gets into a chauffeur driven  Rolls Royce isn't know to the people who are walking by the car. He is anonymous.

In Provincetown, everyone knows who the town drunk is to put it bluntly. Everyone knows everyone else's business to a certain extent.

People have problems and issues both social and emotional. No one wants to talk about it. Anyone who has dealt with anyone with mental illness knows that it is a lost cause that can years of guilt, remorse, sadness, anger, tears and more tears, but it is useless.

It is like drinking medicine and hoping that the object of your affection becomes whole again. I really can't write anymore. May these people find peace in some capacity.as well all have one life to live of which we are aware and some have done nothing but thrown away happiness with both hands almost all the days

Housing Experts

Housing Experts--YET AGAIN!!!

And now this time, twelve regional "experts" in real estate, finance, design and housing will come to Provincetown to take a comprehensive--a--C-0-M-P-R-E-H-E-N-S-I-V-E look--AT OUR HOUSING DEVELOPMENT PROCESS AND recommend realistic options to better use our land assets to address our housing needs.

They will tour around all day and then meet at 5:30-to 7pm for an IN DEPTH discussion about how accomplish this.  THE NEXT DAY..they will present their findings to the planning board.

One, Two,Three a tour, a talk and a meeting with the planning board and PRESTO all of our decades old housing problems will be solved by this planning board.

OR....is.....it...Just **more ammunition** for the selectmen to try to ram this through town meeting and have the taxpayers pay for more people's housing.

What you need are sustainable, middle class producing JOBS. JOBS. JOBS.  This concept of working part time but living here year round collecting is over.

In my next life, I want to come back as a housing consultant and dash about the country side making the big bucks while offering soothing pablum. No more physical labor for me.

Re: Talk About Poor Policing and Management

"How many drunks can this town allow to live on the beach in front of the Post Office? Seriously. This town will make me jump through hoops to replace a window so that it conforms with the historic nature of the property but will allow people to squat on the beach. Talk about poor policing and management."

For once in your miserable life, why don't you just be grateful for all the blessings you have and quit belly-aching about every f***ing thing that makes your little nose quiver???  They are there because they have nowhere else to go, no money for the joke that is "affordable rentals" ($1000 a month or more, ha ha), and have been abandoned by a system that is supposed to give them a hand-up. You have no idea how many may be homeless or disabled vets, or how many mentally ill that can't get supportive housing, or how many need a 30-day rehab bed and can't get one!!  They get dumped on the street to fend for themselves, and they have to deal every day with miserable turds like you who HAVE to judge them, just so you can feel superior.

Key West Mosquito

THE same mosquito that carries the Zika virus also carries the Dengue Fever--tragically, a person in Key West has contracted Dengue Fever from this mosquito.

With the tropical storms approaching, there will be even more of these mosquitoes in Florida.

No one is safe from these viruses that are endemic in other countries with so much world travel and exports arriving from all over the world

The Asian long horned beetles that is devastating evergreens arrived here in wooden pallets aboard ships.. and one of the virus carrying mosquitoes arrived in a shipment of tires--they bred in the water caught in the tire wheel well area.

Lets hope and pray that congress will act before it is to late and allocates money to stop the spread of disease.

Re: Visitors Service Bureau

One of the big problems with the VSB is that you have two people from the same business serving on that board.  The owner always pushes (demands) for marketing/advertising that benefits his business.  And with one of his employees on the board as well their marketing is skewed toward the clientele that patronizes his business.

Visitors Service Bureau

Time for a change VSB. The monies allocated to this fund are ridiculous in the amount wasted. Who the hell comes here because of the VSB that wouldn't already. To dedicate an building on Commercial Street to welcome visitors (and a lame ass TV station) is idiotic. There is a sewer plant that needs to be enlarged if we need to find a way to deal with stupid crap.

Sara Peake might be a resident but she has no more say than anybody else, one person one vote. She can't  single handedly decide for the rest of the taxpayers-voters that the Provincetown police Dept will regionalize with any other town her position as State rep does not give her this power and if you think it does its you who have been lost in space my friend.

Here's a thought...it you don't violate motor vehicle law, you don't get pulled over by ANY cop!  Contrary to what many fools in this town believe, the laws DO APPLY TO YOU TOO.  All sall towns have regional mutual aid, and it doesn't matter what it says on the car if a cop pulls you over..you can't sue anybody just because they pull you over for breakin the law, so QUIT YER BITCHING!!

"Sara Peake does not speak for the people of this town....."

You started off ok, a bit of rambling but some insight when you first posted your questions. Now you've lost it.

Peake was never an AG. She was a selectman in Ptown and then state rep. As far as sueing someone, do you do anything else in your day other than look for the next person to sue? Any more question should be brought to the selectmen's meeting. This place aint getting you anywhere.

Re: Police Regionalization

Police:   The police departments of the outer. Cape have had mutual aid agreements in place for many years and are often involved in multi- town task forces. Because it is an election year there has been a lot of publicity. About the traffic enforcement program.  The best way to have your questions answered is to call the police station at 508-487-1212.  The best way to avoid police interaction is to obey all traffic laws and keep your vehicles in good repair.  ( bald tires, defective lights, loud mufflers ect. ) Give police probable cause to stop you.

Re: Police Regionalization

Really intelligent comment! Sara Peake does not speak for the people of this town or any others when it comes to its employees and property she has absolutely no authority  to over ride town government or the rights of the voters! This is a women who personally attended Truro's disgraced chief Lundborn swearing in an back the decision to make him chief even though she was made aware of all his problems! She was a horrible AG and an even worse State Rep. Let me make this as clear as I can she does not make the laws period!!! and she does not speak for all of us! She has no more right to tell the Chiefs they can do what they want than you do. These cops are our employees not the states those vehicles belong to us not her! This is a democracy not a liberal Peake show!

Typical Provincetown - always looking for someone to sue. Of course you think your rights have been violated.  It's a common occurrence for slackers like you. What happened? Sucked your landlord dry and looking for deeper pockets?

Re: Police Regionalization

The town managers and Boards of Selectmen should dust off the liability insurance policy in their file cabinets to determine whether such extended geographic police coverage in neighboring towns is allowed in the policy or a special rider needs to be obtained to the policy?

Every involved party gets sued in litigation.

Will the summer police grant pay for this xtra cost if required?

What if a town does not have the staff to extend this coverage on a given day/shift?

Will police officers provide this coverage as part of their 40 hour employment or will be only offered as special duty time (overtime).

How many man hours/shifts/time of day, cruisers will be deployed from Provincetown which has the most to lose in this proposition in terms of decreased coverage, stressed out officers during our peak summer season?

We already have officers sleeping on special duty when they work in town off season.

Most importantly, how will this program be evaluated for its effectiveness?

The Provincetown chief?, the Provincetown town manager?, the Eastham town manager?, the Eastham chief,? Who do I sue if my rights were violated? WELL!!! I would really like an answer to this! Who gave cops in other towns the right to patrol our town? Our chief? Our TM? Who! who is responsible for this decision without the approval of the voters!?!?!

Re: Police Regionalization

"Tin God's" posting thinks he/she should have the authority to tell Police Chiefs how to run their departments in defense of public safety for all! The agreement I read in the paper was organized by our State Rep.,Sarah Peake and the lower cape Police Chiefs for Public Safety! Does "Tin God" want to do Rep. Peake's job too?

Re: Bernie et Nader

"I am for Hillary and see Bernie as a Ralph Nader Clone

He just can't make it. He is not that experienced. He has passion but so do I. He has ideas, but so do I. However, he does not have leadership at the executive level and Trump will simply turn him over like a stone. He has no chance with Trump but he will cause our country to be led by a fascist, a demagogue, a bigot, a racist.

This is not what America needs or should have. Sanders will undermine all the good that this nation holds. He will hand over the election to this sick Nazi."

You just have to be out of your mind. Now you are evaluating our restaurants and the standard is Florence?

You just can't be serious. This is beyond the acceptable standard.

We are who we are and Florence is just not and perhaps never will be our standard.

Re: Police Regionalization

I know where the original post is coming from but once again, through all the BS, he does have a point.

Yes the "grant" is paying for the cops to patrol the different towns but how is the money split amongst the towns? How do any of us know? When will we know when the grant money be used up? Is there a time limit? What expenses does the grant cover? Fuel, wear and tear, etc.? When or how do we see proof of the system working or not working which then would be the basis for the grant to be funded again?

Yes, the police do read this blog and I think it would be very helpful if one of them relayed this to his or her chief and they "by chance" decide to go to a selectmen's meeting to explain the process in more detail for the public.
