  Mark Silva: A Rich Goodby

The church was packed. There was even a long line to enter St. Peter's. There were people sitting along the side pews. All the pews were filled.

We were there to attest to your legacy, to what you gave to this town and to all of us. You brought the energy for the Portuguese Festival and revived it. You brought the energy for the Regatta and revived this wonderful celebration. You gave of yourself, of your time and of your vision.

The town was there to bid you farewell and to thank you for everything that you have done for us. And you did it with humor, joy and a sense of much celebration. You knew how to throw a party and taught the town to do it too!

You were unique and you will be missed. But you would not leave without our thanks and without a party at the Red Inn. We were there with tears and we were there with much laughter and gratefulness for you.

Adieu, Mark! May the angels carry you on holy wings into eternal peace and celebration!

Re: The Crisper Air, The Cooler Breezes and Even Some Silent Moments

"Visitors will come, yet there will more empty...."

Your blog is very nice and appropriate at this time of the season.
Proof-reading is a lost art in the same boat with the High School.  Time is
a'wastin and there are condos in the shute just waiting to be born with high on
the hill primo harbor views.  Father Time will tell the tale.

The Crisper Air, The Cooler Breezes and Even Some Silent Moments

Seems Fall is edging its way into our lives. Even as Labor Day Weekend is here,
with anticipation of more people, there is a reality of less, a sense that
things have already changed. Visitors will come, yet there will more empty
spaces along Commercial Street, more empty seats along Town Hall, more abandoned
slips at Fisherman's Wharf, and unoccupied moorings at Flyer's.

You turn around one day and Summer has left, without hardly a goodbye. Then you
notice the full moon revealing the empty sea and it is Fall.

Re: Swim For Life

The real question is ......

Is anyone the least concerned that there will be hundreds of people in the water
at the same time making lots of noise at a time when the whole outer Cape is
loaded with Great White sharks ???

Many of whom appear within 10 feet of shore both on the Bay and Ocean side.

Can't follow this logic for the life of me.

Re: Board of Assessors

The Board of Assessors has been requesting the same information from
commercial property owners for years and years.  They have the authority to do
so under the laws of Massachusetts, Chapter 59, Section 38D.  They also have the
authority to assess penalties for failure to comply with information requests.
All of the towns and cities in Massachusetts request the same type of
information from owners of commercial, industrial and apartment properties.
Under the law the assessors can also request the information from owners of
houses and condominiums who rent out their property.  The assessors use the
income and expense information to help them determine the market value of
property when developing proeprty tax assessments.  This is done in nearly every
state in the US and in most other countries as well.  If you don't like it then
change the state law on it, but the local assessor has a duty to uphold the laws
on the books.

Re: Tax Rate

"As it is now small homeowners are subsidizing
businesses."

This is false.  As it is now residential and commercial properties pay the same
rate.  This means that people who own a residence and live in it pay the same
rate as people who own a residence and rent it out.  People who own and operate
a small business from their commercial property pay the same rate.  People who
rent out their commercial property pay the same rate.  The only people whose
property taxes are subsidized are those living in affordable housing.

Small businesses are the economic engine of this town.  They are just that:
small businesses.  If taxes are raised on them it will just make it harder for
them to continue to survive in an environment that is increasingly difficult for
them to stay in business due to external influences such as price wars from
internet sellers and big box store and the general economic malaise affecting
this country.

High School is Over and Done With

Why "fix" it ow? it wasn' done before and now we have the last class. This is a
joke.

Why didn't the elementary students stay in the elementary school and then find
something new to do with the high school. No CPC monies for the school. it is

Re: 90 Shankpainter

I recently moved into the 90 Shankpainter development. Before I moved
here, living in this town was hard. I am sorry that I cannot afford to own a
half million dollar house. The process to qualify for moving here was very
extensive, not to mention the fact it was a lottery and nothing was guaranteed
to begin with. Yes, some people had to give up their side jobs to qualify for
the income limit. Does any complaining baby on this page know what those limits
are? look them up, you will realize that it is hardly enough for two people or a
family to live off for the year after expenses such as gas, food, and
electricity. So what if someone needs to stop a side job to qualify, not to
mention the fact that after we moved in here we are no longer subject to the
gouging of property owners and their sudden whims to sell and boot you out with
barely any notice. So if we live here, we no longer need to work like dogs 7
days a week 15 hours a day. I have gotten to know many of the people here.
They are all great people, who NEEDED this. It is a good thing
to see people have a stable and affordable home. I cannot speak for everyone but
I know that I am so thankful and blessed to be in this great new development. So
I'll enjoy my time here and be thankful for what I have, even if it means some
dope on this blog thinks we all are cheating the system. (I'm not too sure
anyone on here ever knows what the hell they are talking about anyways) Go on
and keep complaining though! Its probably the only thing your good at!
Sincerely,
Affordable and comfortable

Abstract Art

Abstract art once known as "crap art" was on the same level as
"paint-by-numbers art". What was clever about F. Kline,a drunk guy on his hands
and knees  with a can of house paint and a big house paint brush spattering
paint all over a canvas  on the floor? Then clever part was that he found a good
P.R. person to promote his work to the so called intellectual elite  and
superior sophisticates with a lot of money and a need to rebel against
representational art. No secret that you don't need to know how to paint and
draw abstract art even though it is said you do. It's up for interpretation and
in the eye of the beholder.Representational art takes skill and has endured for
centuries and will survive many more because it is identifiable.

Re: Swim for Life

Nice, now you passive agressive try to slam Swim for Life through posing a false
question. Is no one safe from your toxicity and hatred? Please post a copy of
the check you were going to send so we can see how generous you are.

Did you try going even one step beyond the web? A simple call to Jay Critchely
would yield the organization's 990-PF form which they are required to provide to
anyone that asks. You can also find the same information through www dot
guidestar dot org.

According to the 990-PF for 2010 for Provincetown Community Compact, Inc.(the
most recent year available due to IRS filing deadlines/dates):

Swim for Life raised a total for $208,904
Other contributions: $70,458
Dune shack rental: $4,800
TOTAL REVENUE: $284,547

Grants to local organizations: $162,115*
* includes:  $10k-out cape health, $51k helping our women, $5k rescue squad,
$65k AIDS support group, $5k lower cape ambulance, $4k soup kitchen and more
minor grants

Grants to Haiti for earthquake relief: $45,616

Salary and other employee costs incld taxes: $39,000 (26k is salary).

Net income for 2010: -$33,000

Seems pretty well run to me.

Again, let's see that big check you were going to write.

Re: Year Rounders

"Resident and non-resident homeowner /taxpayers should be on the same
taxrate. Why do they think it should be different?"

Because non resident homeowners are operating on wages and incomes based on
urban Boston/NYC markets. While resident homeowners are economically tied to the
resort economy. Hence the dual tax rate system, like income taxes, is more
progressive with the wealthy paying slightly more

Re: Eliminate CPA - Hawthorne Barn

To the poster who doesn't want CPA funds used to repair the High
School. This poster refutes that attitude! That's a more meaningful place to use
those funds than the "give-a-ways" to private property owners such has been
being done. Stop passing blame and let's fix the school!!

Re: Year Rounders

Resident and non-resident homeowner /taxpayers should be on the same

different tax rate.As it is now small homeowners are subsidizing  businesses by
sharing the same rate Check  it out!

you want from the Mass. Attorney General's website.   When you get there, you

this non-profit then please let us know just how large of a donation you made
(yeah right).

Maybe you'll find they spent too much on pencil sharpeners and therefore you
won't donate.  I have a feeling you don't donate anything to anybody and are
just trying stir the pot because you don't like someone affiliated with or

Re: HDC vs Zoning

Confused on How Putting HDC rules under Zoning Would Offer Legal
Protection for Historic buildings?

Now we have both HDC and Zoning involved in issues of size, scale, design and

This doesn't follow logically. But I'll wait for an answer.

Ask the State, they are the ones who are requiring this info.  The state doesn't
seem interested in going after private residences who rent out their property
and it's not the local assessor's role.

Re: HDC - 90 Shankpainter

The HDC nit-picks the trim line and roof pitch of a building in town
but finds it acceptable to demolish an actual piece of history is appalling, so
what if the barn has no white trim and the correct shade of color used on the
siding, so what, this town was originally beach shack and make shift shelters so
how about we go back to that, there's historical precedent.
The HDC should be dissolved and the committees responsibilities be given to the
zoning board, at least then there would be legal protection for truely historic
places.

And concerning 90 shankpainter, that complex is a facist project where the
government was used to maximize the profits of a private organization(corporation).
We as a town lost 2 million on this horribly designed and planned
complex...because for one we gave away a million dollar property and for two
lost the potential profits from the sale of that property, equalling 2 million.
People on this blog need to get away from the looks of this complex, even though
the cheap construction and landscaping are already showing their inadequacies.
Complaining about the looks is useless and childish, but we have not seen the
problems in full regarding circulation, public safety(traffic) and the complexes
benefit to the town as a whole.

Re: Provincetown's Art Legacy and PAAM

Thanks for Informing Us About the Bias Against Representational Art at
PAAM

I didn't know that but it helps explain how charles Hawthorne is used to root
this town as the oldest art colony but yet, he is hardly present in today's
world at PAAM.

this helps explain why nothing much was done by PAAM when Charlest Hawthorne's
house and the land around it on Miller Hill was available to be bought. Instead,
it was overly developed making today's studio an isolated building surrounded by
too many condominiums.

Sad to treat such history, land, artist and legacy with such disdain. time to
shift and appreciate what Hawthorne did for all of us here. he puts us on the
map!

Re: Provincetown's Art Legacy and PAAM

I think if you look objectively at PAAM's exhibits over the past year or so
(here's a link if the webmaster permits it: http://www.paam.org/previous.html )
you see a wonderful balance of contemporary and historic Provincetown art.  And
a lovely mix of representational and non-representational work.

The Motherwell show is a major coup for the museum and for Chris McCarthy for
two reasons:  1) it is the first and only show to display Motherwell's complete
Provincetown works.  Love him or hate him (I am personally not a fan),
Motherwell is a seminal figure in the history of modern art.  2) the show
validates the decision to expand PAAM.  It wouldn't have been possible to
display this show in the previous space and major donors were reluctant to lend
important pieces to PAAM.

Here's a reminder of PAAM's mission statement:  "The objects and purposes of
this association shall be to promote and cultivate the practice and appreciation
of all branches of the fine arts, to assemble and maintain in the town of
Provincetown and environs a collection of works of art of merit, to hold
exhibitions, and by forums, concerts and similar activities to promote education
of the public in the arts and social intercourse between artists and laymen. To
these ends it shall operate strictly within its charter as a nonprofit,
educational, artistic and cultural organization.

Constitution and By-laws Provincetown Art Association and Museum, 1921"

I believe they are achieving that mission.

Re: Hawthorne Barn - PAAM

Yes, If PAAM Had Bought and Should Now buy the Hawthorne Barn:

You'd have a wodnerful historic place to teach classes and as you said even have
certain town art works on display. It would be the actual place Charles
Hawthorne painted and it would solidify history with present reality.

Enough of unappreciating Hawthorne yet using his legacy over and over again to
promote PAAM. There is a disjunction here and it could be resolved with the
purchase of the barn.

Why haven't they bought it? It's close to PAAM too and should be a
consideration. This should not be a personal home! It should remain a studio and
be connected to PAAM.

Re: Year Rounders

I agree that second homeowners actually support the town through the
property taxes that they pay.  They may only be here part of the time, but they
pay the same taxes as those who are full-time town residents.

Notice I did not use the term "year rounder" as many people who are town
residents (e.g. are registered to vote here and Provincetown is their legal
residence) do not live here year round because they travel away off-season, or
stay in their second home somewhere else.

I am a Provincetown resident, and while my property taxes would go down if we
adopted a scheme to shift taxes to non-resident property owners, I would not
support such a scheme.  Moreover, this would be a difficult program for the town
to administer.

Couldn't agree with you more, especially in regards to the bias against
representational art. I was having this exact discussion with a friend recently

and relate to than abstract art, making it more accessible to the masses.
Literally, everyone can enjoy it. If that happens, the intellectually elite can
no longer feel sophisticated and superior.

It's a shame, because some great representational art has been done, and

Re: Hawthorne Barn - Abolition of the CPA

"If you knew the law you would know the CPA can NOT currently be
abolished."

Actually I do know the law and it CAN be revoked once it has been in place for 5
years or longer.  So Provincetown voters can revoke it now with one caveat: if
the fund currently owes  debt, then that debt must be repaid first; but even in
that case, all new projects can be totally stopped by the voters and only funds
used to retire the debt if there is any.

Don't want to believe it?  Then read the enabling legislation and learn for

Rather than keep so much of Provincetown's art legacy in the attic, or on

strong intelligent woman.  Candace has no use for fools and gets right to the
root of the problem.  She is also a very kind, generous  and gentle woman once

this fine woman can accomplish, just imagine what she could if she was given the

Re: Hawthorne Barn

How Can town voters Be so Easily Scammed?

Now I see that this is exactly what occurred with the Charles Hawthorne Barn.
Plans were not in place but there was a rush to hand over the CPC monies to Mr.
Praeger. I don't think he was involved with this town or had been here for long.
It was a vote on future possibilities and not present actualities. the vote
should never have come up at town meeting and should have been vetted by the CPC
before such a vote.

There's so little left of Charles Hawthorne's house and land where he painted.
Even the barn now looks like a museum among developments allowed along dunes.
It's a shame and then thhis adds to the tragedy.

And yet Charles Hawthorne is used, promoted, and celebrated when we speak about
our artistic history but little care has been given to what he owned and where
he lived.

Such a scam with $75,000 voted for this out-of-town dreamer, leaving us with the
sale of the barn and another pie-in-the-sky plan from Mr. Praeger.

Sounds Like an Ethical Problem With This Borkowski

If he was a personal advisor to Praeger, the Hawthorne Barn owner, and then he,
Borkowski advocated for a decision by a board he was on, then this is not legal
and is defintely a conflict of interest.

Why didn't Borkowski recuse himself instead of voting and advocating for a
person he was a personal advisor to? He should have disclosed his relationship
to Praeger and should have recused himself. then he should have walked out of
the room until the vote was taken by others. This is a breach of the state
ethics.

Boston and most of its suburbs provide a tax break to primary residences.
Provincetown should do the same. Why should year round Provincetown taxpayers
underwrite vacation homes?

90 Shankpainter Rd Comments

I think the units at 90 Shankpainter Rd look good and has done wonders to that
area. If you remember correctly, that prior to what was there, no one moaned and
groaned then. Now we have a nice development and wow, here it comes but before
it was okay. I am sure whoever is posting these comments if you built a home and
took a survey, you would find some like what you built and some will not.
Another thing the bloggers need to keep in mind, the amount of people who
applied. So if you don't live there, move on and if you do, then move out.

Something Has Changed?!

I am rather concerned that we have become a Police state town.  Gone
are the days of community policing.  I just heard that that a friend of mine was
pulled over by a high ranking officer.   No reason was given, the only thing
shouted at her were orders to verify that her licence and registration were
indeed not fake.  When she asked what she had done wrong she was litterally told
to keep quiet and still had to defend the authenticity of her licence and
registration.

Did something change or is this what we have to expect from now on?  Last year
my friend who was a student working here was threatened with deportation, when
a policeman wanted to see his papers.
I did not know that this was a police state we live in and frankly it is
disconcerting.

Wow, that would have to be some tax break.  Sure, those who have comfy spots in
the sun in winter would give that up to save a few bucks and suffer harsh
weather to boot.  Maybe the town could start paying people to stay yearround.
Or maybe we could set up a special fund so year-round homeowners could donate
extra taxes to pay the taxes of those we are trying to get to stay in winter.

Yeah, I personally know of several stories like this. My favorites are the
bartenders and waiters who get affordable housing. Anyone who has lived here for
any length of time knows that scam. They go home every night with their pockets
stuffed with hundreds of dollars worth of income that's never reported to the
government. But on the books, they look like paupers and therefore qualify for
low income housing. And yeah, if you mention it someone always says "Well, YOU
should report it!" but why would I want to get involved? Everyone knows it's
happening. Unless they live under a rock, the people who are responsible for
approving or rejecting applicants know (they don't want to open a can of worms
either, apparently) so it just keeps happening.

That's Ptown in a nutshell: whoever runs the best scam wins!

few unknowns get to have so much authority to decide something so vital to this

ANARCHY!! Much damage has been done as a result of their inconsistent decisions

If it is, then this man should be brought to the Ethics Committee. This is

Maybe the CPC Should Not Have Fallen for the Hawthorne Barn Project

Maybe they should have spent more time analyzing the proposals and seeing if
they could and would make sense. They obviously did not spend enough time doing
their due diligence before it went up at town meeting for a vote.

There is something wrong here. It is our money, from our added taxes. why did
this failed plan be approved?

It's not so simple as "over is over". Something went wrong and it should not
happen again.

Lower-Class Housing is a Problem With Developers

Trying to squeeze in every inch of space and cutting all the trees that made the
land beautiful. It has nothing to do with the people living there or who will be
living there. It is the way these "affordable" housing projects have been built
and stacked together without concern for smallness, quantiness, or good taste.

The land on 90 Shannkpainter could have been beatifuly developed but were
not, even though we gave the developers the land, gave them the $1 million
property for a $1 99 year lease. And yet we lost control over the plans or willingly
gave it up from town hall.

Good taste should not be sacrificed for developers' profits. Sadly, that is what
has happened and been allowed to happen here. It should not have.

Re: Historic District

Historic district boundaries are determined by the area of historical
significance, eg where there are historically contributing structures.
Shankpainter and others areas outside the boundary have few if any contributing
structures. Similarly at the western boundary buildings like Murchinson House,
while architecturally significant are not part of the historic period that is
the focus of preservation efforts. Regarding developer maximization outside
district that is one of the perverse effects of something like this, it forces
new development into specific zones.

What an obnoxious thing to say! Perhaps it never occurred to you, but the people
who work in our restaurants and shops, the Jamaicans and Eastern Europeans who
have begun making our town their home, the people who love the town and choose
to live here despite the fact they will never be able to afford owning property
here - those people need to live someplace too. Not everyone here is a wealthy
business owner or retired millionaire. Some of us are, in your words,
"lower-class" and we need to live somewhere. We can't just camp out in the woods
at night and come into town to serve your food and clean your house during the
day. I'm sure you'd rather not think about us when we're not waiting on you,
you'd rather keep us out of sight so you can enjoy your privileged existence.
But Provincetown is our town just as much as it is yours, so get used to
"lower-class" housing. Unless you'd like to rent me a room in your upper-class,
historic house for a reasonable rate? Oh yeah, as if that would ever happen...

Re: Hawthorne Barn - Stehpen Borkowski

So will Stehpen Borkowski be Involved in This New Hawthorne Barn
change.

This man was the advisor to Praeger and helped him get the CPC finance for the
$75,000. Now will he try to "help" the new owners of the Hawthorne Barn and try
another innovative but unrealistic deal with the town?

I'm just wondering and think he just may be back in the picture as he was with
Praeger, his personal advisor and in doing so, Borkowski was involved in a
conflict of interest. He was the alternate on the Historic District Commision
and on this board he advocated for Praeger to allow the demolition of part of
the Hawthorne Barn. so much for keeping the old. so much for preserving, over
tearing down, historic buildings. But as Praeger's personal advisor, Borkowski
should have recused himsefl , instead of being a loud voiced advocate for
Praeger.

Watch for this guy to show up again!

The Outlines of the Historic District Just Don't Make Sense

Glad that much that should be oonsidered historic is in the district, but so
much was left out. Why? What did those who drew the lines know?. what did they
intend for the parcels and land outside the historic district?

Some clearly knew that these parcels could be sold for a certain  price since
they would have NO HDC regulations. They could be stacked high, altered,
demolished, dormered to death and that would be fine.

Some gained from these lines. Ask who did. Just ask.

Re: Historic District

Some of the People on the Committee that Created the Lines of Historic
District

I think there was Eric Dray, now Chair of the Historical Commission, and Ginny
Binder and also Tom Boland and Chris McCarthy. some may know some of the others.

The lines and demarcations are rather odd. They leave Shankpainter open to any
development, maximized by Ted Malone. They leave ends of little street like
Bangs Street outside the district. And perhaps the oddest, they left the top of
Miller Hill, the very place where Charles Hawthorne lived and workd outside the
district. wOuldn't you make certain that his house and his studio would be
included? But was not.

Someone may be able to present the arguments for the odd shape of this district
but I surely can't. But certain developers have mazimized the areas that lie
outside the district. You couldn't have the over-development and house upon
house on Shankpainter Road if this was in the Historic district. Sadly, it is
not. and it looks more like a lower-class housing than Provincetown rentals.

Hope this helps in partly answering your question.

Some blogger here must be a graduate of the Rep. Troy Akin School of

People make their own sexual decisions -- too frequently influenced by

You wanna talk about mistreatment and abuse? Talk to anyone who's ever worked
with Ryan, you'll get an earful. If a performer physically assaults the owner of
the club where he performs and the owner then fires the performer, do you
honestly see that as arrogance on the owner's part? Man, some people have a

Rather than tell you the information I would suggest you look it up on the
town's web site.  If you don't know how to look it up ask someone to assist you
and then you will be able to find out information for yourself rather than
having to ask others to do it for you.

Generous

Exactly, Robert Duffy, President to the Marc Jacob's companies, certainly must
be the most generous single donor to the town and the charities supported within
it's boundaries.  he is discreet, generous and seems not to expect anything in
return but the ability to visit here under the radar. I hope he will continue to
do so.

a win win win.
10:59 am edt

Get Off the Defensive!

No one has belittled Robert Duffy for being generous to Provincetown and in
many ways recipients are grateful. The issue with the private birthday part on
Town property was that the reports of "goings-on" that occurred were covered
up rather than headlined in the newspaper like it would have been for others.
Was it because town officials were present?

Just wondering why police,if there, weren't observing. Some things other than
prestige are more important. Money is the root of all evil!

A Valuable Message Board

This website is more of a message board than a blog and I find it valuable. I
learn about things happening in town; certain opinions/perspectives and
questions people have about what is going on. I filter out the bile and un
truths and take it with a grain of salt same as any message board.

As far as answers to questions, I know a couple:

Kenny retired from being the town crier - he had some health concerns and seems
to be doing fine.

The fancy party went through a couple public hearings, where were you then if
you object?

The meetings are all on available online at ptv, they we're noticed in the
newspaper, certified abutter letters were sent out and agendas  for all meetings
are available at the town website.

I urge contributors to this board to at least take 10 minutes, 5 even - to look
stuff up before bitching about things. If you really have questions and want
answers just ask- I bet someone who reads the site has the answer....

Just How Dumb Are We?

Preparing for special town meeting....

Is it true some of our police administrators don't even have a college
education?

We're asking because.....

1. We're gonna give up millions to be overseen by people with less than a
college degree? Really? Just how dumb are we?

2.  There may be a double standard (you think?) because newly hired police
OFFICERS are required to have a college degree (yet those supervising them are
less educated). Really?

3. The            has only a high school diploma. IS THAT TRUE?

Chief Jaran, we'd love to hear from you!

Serious Concern

Before anyone starts accusing me of gossip, rumor mongering, etc., let
me preface this post by saying that this is a  legitimate concern about a
serious issue and I'm unsure of how to address it. I'm hoping some of the
readers of this blog may be able to advise me on how to proceed.

In recent weeks several people I know or am acquainted with here in town have
been diagnosed with gonorrhea and it would appear that all of the cases can be
traced back to a local guesthouse which is known for raucous parties (I am not
naming names, this is not about that.) This is a serious issue and if a local
establishment is spreading STDs, I wonder if something can be done about this?
Do I contact the board of health? Shouldn't the staff and guests of this
guesthouse be made aware of what's going on? Does anybody know the proper way to
address this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is serious, so
please do not make jokes.

Re: Evil Begins With Superiority

On the town's website there is information on renting TH or the Bas Relief.  It
clearly states that, depending on size, a police presence is required and must
be paid by the people renting the space.  These are off-duty police who are
hired for the evening by the people holding the event.  Again, no conspiracy.
If someone wants to pay to rent the space, and the money goes to the town
coffers, why would you have a problem with that?

And what does it matter that the person who rented it knows Robert Duffy?  Duffy
has done more for this town than just about anyone, through his Marc Jacob
connection.  The store has sold t-shirts that benefited the Rec Dept., Town
Hall, the Library, and other non-profits.

This is one of the problems with big new buildings. Just as the Rec Department

The department will grow to fill the space, and that will cost the taxpayers

If you look on the town's website under "Services A-Z", check R for Rentals.
That outlines the town's policy and the fees associated with renting TH or the

My understanding is that the money raised from rentals goes into a maintenance
fund for the building.

things you're not.  You're more than welcome to use those facilities if you pony

Evil Begins With Superiority

Using town property for public good has usually been allowed. However,
the new trend, approved by Board of Selectmen,is to allow town property to be
used for private parties, such as occurred recently with tent set-up and all.

Apparently someone close to a public official became "very ill" and is still
hospitalized. What about the liability to taxpayers by officials allowing the
use of town property for private party purposes? How stupid is that? How much
did the town make financially or was it gratis?

A quote by English author, G.K.Chesterson," Evil begins with superiority"!

The bulk of the damage is not the quality of the earlier renovation, but the
lack of maintenance in the past few years. Provincetown Town Hall loves the
bling of fancy buildings not the drudgery of routine maintenance.

Re: Troublemaker vs Honest Whistleblower

A whistleblower takes information to the proper authority and files complaints
or questions with the hope they are addressed and fixed. A troublemaker,
(thinking they are untouchable (union)) is someone who just stirs the pot,
exposing issues in an uncomfortable manner and to the improper authorities
(general public and fellow office employees) and ends up demoralizing staff and
making the overall department look foolish. Whistleblowers are encouraged and
protected, troublemakers are not.

There's a vast difference between a "troublemaker" and an "honest

they did there'd be an uprising and the table would turn on who is moved out

Re: Provincetown Police

No, the summer Police Have to Be Trained

Just being here, summer after summer, is not enough. but it's never enough.
that's why you have education and since they are part of an intership program,
they should be getting classes about Provincetown, classes in understanding
diversity, learning more about sociology and psychology. that is what makes an
internshhip program great. there has to be knowledge, understnaindg and analysis
as part of the actual experience. they are on the street but they are not
learning much about what they are seeing and how to handle our town. It's not
difficult to do but it should be done. and that means bringing in sociologists,
psychologists and anthropologists to help round out their course.

Otherwise, it's just summer camp.

Effiencient Use of town Monies in Getting Rid of Vernon?

How foolish. he is needed and his work is full time. there is so much paperwork

assistant town managers, assistant town clerks, assistant anythings but only
this one key person to direct the flow of information, to take minutes, to set
up packages of documents for each meeting and to handle all concerns that come
into town hall dealing with BOS issues. Not to see all the work that it takes to
keep the BOs informed, to keep them following the legal requirements, and handle
all corespondence they need is to be blind to the work of government.

The problems are not lack of experience, I bet their mother told them how to

Provincetown's problem is poor training and little oversight from management,
and a very poor example set by our chief of police.

The town government and police department are obsessed with new cruisers, new
boats, net toys and a new police station. They have all but given up on the feet

I happen to KNOW it's not a full time position.  Vernon was out on an extended

This isn't about Vernon, it's about efficient use of limited town resources.

It Seems to Me That What Many Want......

....is a police department that is connected with the town. People who respond to

I also think many want a town manager who is genuine and geniunely cares about
all the people in town, not just a small segment of like minded friends. I think
they want openness and concern, not deals done behind closed dooors. they want a
person who represents the town and its best interests.

This man has gone through sheer hell and has put up with a lot that no

lasted no longer than 2 1/2 years.  This one has lasted 13 year and its a wonder
why he has not seeked legal adivse long ago. Many people have encouraged him to.

He could be retired 10 times for all the      he has been dealt and put up with. The facts

stood up for what is right and stood up for those who were wronged by your
management that is clearly           and biased towards its cronies.

In due time - TM and Russell Braun will be history. It will happen!! Provincetown residents

Vernon's Position is Not Being Cut for Budgetary Reasons....

........but because Sharon wants the position that the BOS had and she wants
a full-time secreatary for her, leaving the BOS with a $5,000 amount to pay for a
secreatary. that was what we saw in the budget presented at the May town
meeting. but we voted to shift $50,000 to the BOS budget, giving the BOs a
full-time secreatary. and of course they need a full time secreatary. but Sharon
wants that position and I bet at the special town meeting, we will be asked
again to vote the money for her and take it away from the BOS.

And I bet at this special meeting, they will demand that we vote to buy
equipment for the DPW that we voted down in May and that we fund step one of the
ppolcie station. then perhaps the police--because they can't help
themselves--will ask for another toy or two. Another motorcycle to ride up and
down our streets or a new right vehicle.

Ooopps, you just proved the point.  Yes, regulatory boards need a secretary -
for a maximum of four hours a month.  Reinforces the fact the BOS don't need a
full time position.  Vernon doesn't need to be out of a job, he can take over
the part-time position open in the town clerk's office and work part-time in
each position.

Not even close, one is an elected official, the other an senior town employee.
That fact the poster doesn't distinguish the elected from employee is part of
the problem. And I think part of Lynn and Jaran's problem is they seem to think
Town works for them.

While Lynn still has a base of support, Jaran has passed the tipping point and

What a shame, that this kind, gentle competant man is being forced out, he has
been a faithful servent of the town for years and now will be at the mercy of a
transient BOS and the town manager, who I am not longer a fan of.

Is there no humanity left in this "town without pity"  I think a voters revolt
is in the offing, it is a G.D. shame, and I am ashamed to have supported the
very administration that has sat back and allowed this to happen.

First the Asst. Librarian was bulliied out of a job and now this.  No longer are

Where is he to go, an older worker, health issues and not soon to be out!

BOS Secretary

Under no circumstances should the Board of Selectmen's Secretary
position be filled by an individual serving as a secretary to someone working in
our municipal government.

So if the BOS don't generate enough work to justify a full-time position, then
the BOS secretary should only work for the BOS. He or zhe could work somewhere
else for income supplementing, but not for anyone in town government.

Town Employees

Every so often, the fat is cut from the staff. Some sign their own card as we
have seen in recent weeks. The troublemakers are the ones that, when given
enough rope, hang themselves. That's not a bad thing. When gone, the rest of the
staff realizes the work can be done even without those that have left meaning
the position was superfluous. It's sometimes a doubele plus in that the
troublemakers are gone and the town now saves money. Others, like Vernon, are
not troublemakers but are cut for budgetary reasons and that is too bad. That's
someone that gave their job their all and got nothing but a paycheck for their
efforts. In a small town, personalizing a position is a good thing. These aren't
nameless faces in the community. By the same token, the troublemakers aren't
nameless faces either and for some, it's been a long time coming.

Sadly Vernon Will "Retire" in November

Pushed out. thrown out. Undervalued. Not valued at all.

This is a good and hard working man that has been so poorly treated.

And of course the BOS need a secreatary. If regulatory boards in town need
secretaries, then more than any other board, the selectmen need a secretary.

They take for granted all the backroom work that goes into preparing for each
meeting. This position began with the Couture, a woman who despised Vernon and
now continues to influence some on the board. she made his life miserable and
the others continue this sad tradition.

While I'm not a fan of spending our hard earned tax dollars a new police station

The last two officers to leave (from the "old regime") did so due to medical

Re: Town Manager and Police Chief

What this Town Manager and Police Chief are doing is to get rid of everyone that
has been at the PD for a long time and this is no secret as it has been
circulating around town for a long time now. This is not only sad but wrong.
They don't care about anyone anymore and that's why the people in this town have
to pay attention. If the people in this town approve the new police station, you
then are approving what he has done. Maybe you won't be too concerned but don't
forget what he has done to the residents in this town. The Chief disciplined one
of his officers for not stopping four cars each shift he has worked. If three
police officers are working, then that is 12 cars between the three officers
that has to be stopped.Add that to the three shifts and between 9 police
officers that's 36 cars in a 24 hr day (and that's year round). Wake up
Provincetown. Also, don't forget what he has done to the Custodian and a
Intermittent Police Officer that were forced out as well.

Re: Town Manager

What Sharon Wants is to Take the BOS $50,000 and Shift it to the

With Vernon gone, then she can convince--and it won't take long--the BOS to go
back to having only $5,000 in their budget their secretary while sharon gets a
secreatary for $50,000. this is what was part of the 2012 budget we saw at last
town meeting. Now watch at the special town meeting in October. Look at the
changes that they will ask us--again--to vote on. And I fear the BOS will be
weak kneed again and give their position away.

they are the town manager's boss. They should keep this in  mind. But, they
won't.
10:03 am edt

Town Manager and Police Chief

I just read the posting about the TM getting rid of employees that were here
before she was hired and only wanting people that she chose herself. That
certainly sounds plausible to me because I believe the same to be true of the
Police Chief. As a long time resident and property owner I've watched the young
men and women of the Police Department through the years and I've known most of
them. Now when I see a Police Officer I have no idea who they are or where they
came from. There are only a couple of local officers left and I'm told that they
are holding on by their fingernails because they are being forced out too.
If all of this is true about our Department Heads it won't be long before our
small town is unrecognizable. I know that change is inevitable but that doesn't
mean that it is for the better.

About Vernon's "retirement", it is my understanding that his position reports to

Also, I, as well as many in town, realized how Sharon tried to use Town Meeting
to vote for the elimination of Vernon's position.  I thought that was cowardly
and really shabby.  After failing to have Town Meeting do what she had proposed,
on this matter, at a subsequent BOS meeting, one of the puppets in the BOS was
recruited to critize Vernon's performance.

I certainly understand your concern with the town overspending, but do you
really think public safety is a good place to cut corners? Lets just say we do
eliminate a big chunk of the police force and then lets just say that some huge
emergency happens mid summer, then what? And please don't tell me how peaceful
and well behaved our summer visitors are - I've lived here a long time and I've

What about another $100,00.00 that can't be accounted for? The Financial

Being an honest man he doesn't want to be tied in with errors of his predecessors.

The Town Mgr.was clearly upset that he divulged the unaccounted for sum and she
threw her glasses on the desk. Mr. Van Hoort wants it cleared up so there won't be
any reflection on his work. Can't blame him for that! One FinCom said one of three
things can be done:

1) they can write if off
2)they can move the amount from surplus if they have it

3) they can get it from Town Meeting.

An Expression of Concern

To those who blog and don't have a clue as to how local government is
run - do your homework! Management cannot abuse their employees. Unfortunately
they do,knowing that people need their jobs. When unsavory practices are
performed by some department heads they then try to find a way to  rid the
department of the "whistle blowers" under the guise of disruptive behavior.  We
all know the dirty game it is. So to those who say "shut up and mind your own

you're part of the game! There's a potential 6th long time employee on the firing
line hit list. Honesty isn't always the best policy! The Town hasn't had this
many group firings within  such a few months since Provincetown was

I am tired of a very few people posting the same content over and over

vendettas serve no purpose other than to allow you to stew in your own bile and
hatred.
As to the people quitting/being fired; those are personnel decisions and as such
are protected by federal law.  I know one person who quit to move to another
state; should we track her down to ask her opinion on whether she was happy in
her job?  With the town as one of the major employers here, there is going to be
turnover of positions.
Regarding your ceaseless hatred of the Town Manager and Police Chief, this is
getting REALLY old.  There are no secret cabals, she does not hand-select
candidates for office, and she's doing a very good job in a thankless position
and town.
The Police Chief is maintaining order.  Yesterday there were rants about
unprofessional police; most of the force are seasonal hires, so they don't have
the experience that our full-time police have.
The deification of Eric Yingling is also getting old.  He had no qualifications
for office, has comported himself poorly (lying, eating dinner during meetings,
ignoring his 'constituents' on the street.  The story is you can tell how
important you are in this town by whether or not Eric acknowledges your
presence.  There are people (evidently not important) who he's met on many
occasions, but always acts as if he doesn't know them, and if he encounters them
on the street he totally ignores them.  Maybe that's what we want in our
selectmen?
Please get outside, enjoy the beach, and stop being so hateful.

What's Going on?

What's going on with our current administration? Five(5) people have
been fired and one quit in the last couple of months. three(3),were long time
employees. What do they know that we don't? Maybe there needs to be an open
public investigation between all parties so we can all see where the skeletons
are being buried. They'll say "we can't,they're personnel issues" becuse the
Town's being sued on all counts! It's our tax money. The Town is'nt a private
institution. We are the Town! Are we paying the Town lawyers for management
misjudgements?

We demand to know why!!

Let's be honest here.  This isn't about Catherine Russo and her qualifications.
She's on your radar because she wrote a letter to the Banner.  Nothing more,
nothing less.  I'm sure she's a wonderful person, but the reason she popped up
on your radar is the letter to the Banner.

And if that's all it takes for someone to become a great Selectman candidate we
need to raise our standards.

Here is the quote:
Candace Nagle (posting as herself)

"State law requires you to use a crosswalk when one is available. If an

with no push buttons
automatically give WALK signals. Be patient!
Do not cross if the signal says DONT WALK............"

Concerns About "Protecting Provincetown"

Last night, my girlfriend showed me about how to get the police channel on my
iPhone (5-0 Radio). A cool app, but very very very disappointing results in what
I heard while drinking on the deck of the Surf Club this afternoon.. Our town is
being raped. Hook, line and sinker.

It started when we arrived at the square just before 5PM. What an earful we
heard from the people at the parking lot booth, all complaining about the stupid
tourists who pay top dollar to park close to the pier. A collection of old,
bitter, retired employees... not so welcoming. Do they not realize the poor
tourists that come here cut down our property taxes? Talk about dumb.

Once we got to the Surf Club, I listened to my scanner app. Very enlightening
about how our tax dollars are being well spent. The pier police officer signed
off before the last two ferries left. So much for police presence. What's the
point?

What's even more enlightening is how busy the other towns on the Cape are
compared to P'town. We're talking real life emergencies. Out town sounds like
Mayberry. Many of the officers need directions to the scene, need to be
instructed to pick up forms (an accident form caused one officer to question
what that was and the dispatcher had to repeat the information). This might be
material for a sitcom, but we pay property taxes here. So the funny went out the
window with reality.

At 9.40 PM, an officer expressed concern about a vehicle parked in the square
since 3.30. No one responded.

We've got cops on foot patrol, car patrol, bike patrol, cops on the pier,
parking enforcement officers, not to mention a chief and a bunch of officers in
cars, many of whom make more than $100K a year.

Yet a car remains in the square, illegally parked, without a ticket, for over
three hours. Really?

The police chief should listen to the dispatch log (which I think, by law, is
recorded). He'll get an earful. Some of the officers don't even speak proper
English.

Comforting, isn't it?

At best, all of the money we're spending for traffic, parking, police and safety
could be used to fund the soup kitchen during the winter. Just a thought.

A house is not a home. Perhaps a new police station will make us more efficient.

I cant wait to hear the barrage of posts saying how wonderful the police are.

Listen to 5-0 and you will hear what is troubling.

Actually the law is the ADA which requires the Town to give "reasonable

Allowing a pedicab to deliver someone to a car is a reasonable expectation of an
accommodation.

Another example of poor training at the Police Department. Why not send a letter

Maybe that's a good idea, but unlikely. The Building Committee will not stray

They will never contradict Knight-Lynn-Jaran. So we will get a mammoth building

Special Town Meeting Ideas

The voters need to start taking more notice of what is happening, what is being
done and most importantly how. At the last Town Meeting, the Town Manager (in
co-hoots with the Police Chief), eliminated the Custodians position at the
Police Station by eliminating a line item in the Police budget without making
the voters first aware that once they okayed the budget they were also
eliminating a position. So don't be suprised at what they do but if we don't
start analyzing these nasty little tricks, it will or could potentially get
worse.
3:39 pm edt

Special Town Meeting

The $50,000 put back into the BOs budget for 2013 was for a BOS
secretary.

I bet they want to change that at this false-here-we-go-again Special Town
Meeting. It was Bedard who made the motion and this way the budget was accepted.
Otherwise, it may not have been. The BOS have $50,000 for a secreatary and many
expected that this would be for Vernon and he could continue to be
secreatary--even though Sharon has told him he was out by June.

This looks like another finagle the bagle deal so that Sharon can get a full
time secreatary as well as her Assistant town Manager. Soon you will see that her
secretary will need a secreatary and her assistant town manager will need a
secreatary. And the BOS will probably foolishly write their own
minutes and look to get a part-time person.

Accessible and Safe Sidewalks

All summer long I've listened to people complaining about the behavior
of bike riders on Commercial St. They go to fast, they're dangerous, etc. As
someone who uses a bike as my primary mode of transportation in the summer, I
have to deal with a multitude of dangerous behavior in others - children running
out in front of my bike, oblivious tourists walking out into the street without
looking, cars swerving to avoid said tourists, etc. Now, obviously pedestrians
in the street are at the root of most of these problems and I understand that
it's just the way it is and has always been. I'm not suggesting that we restrict
them to the sidewalk, I understand that would be impossible.

However, this morning I saw a disturbing sight: a frail, frightened looking
elderly woman with a walker being helped by two people as she attempted to
navigate the chaos of Commercial St. As I passed, I overheard them talking about
how she is unable to use the sidewalk because it is made of uneven brick and
very dangerous to someone like her. This never occurred to me. I have however,
noticed that the sidewalk is all but impossible to use for people with
strollers.

Maybe when we are done re-paving the road, we might think about installing a
more practical and user friendly sidewalk? The brick is not historically
accurate or well constructed. Let's make our town accessible to and safe for
everyone.

Why Are Pedicabs Not Allowed in Parking Lots?

So today I needed to take a pedicab back to my car as I parked in the
furthest lot up at the high school. (The lot right next to the pay booth as you
go out to Shankpainter.) Upon entering the lot off of Bradford we were told by
the parking attendant ( a cranky lady) that the pedicabs were not allowed in the
parking lot as they could cause alot of injuries to people. Are you kidding me?
Alot of injuries? What about all of the people who drive through there like
crazy people? After explaining the situation to her, ( I had twisted my ankle)
and could not walk, she said she would let us go through. Then she started to
speak very sternly to our driver and said we've told your boss you can't come in
here......

I don't see a problem with the pedicabs being able to drive through the lots
especially when you have to park in East Osh Gosh just to be able to walk into
town. Its good for business. On several occassions I have had to park in the
furthest lot this summer and sometimes after walking all over town, it would be
nice to be able to get a ride back to my car. The pedicab company makes money
and more people might park in the far lot.

Just wondering why the pedicabs aren't allowed to go through the parking lot?

Re: Can We Prevent Property Tax Overrides?

YES, IT'S CALLED VOTING AND YOU CAN VOTE NO WHEN THE OVERRIDE IS PROPOSED AT
TOWN MEETING. WAKE UP!!!!

Prop 2 1/2 allows a town to increase taxes 2.5% over last years amount. When an
expenditure goes over that and approval is asked for at town meeting, the voters
hear a sob story about how it's needed and if not passed, police and teachers
will be laid off. With an overstaffed police department and a soon to be out of
commission school, where will the sob story turn to next? Town Hall?

Grow a pair and stand up at town meeting and vote no. That makes the selectmen
and TM work harder to find ways to fund projects that are out of control.

Re: Town Manger

Oh, and for those of you who say the Town Manager is not educated:

Interview with Sharon Lynn
By Laura Shabott
November 28th, 2010

What is it like to manage a village as diverse and complex as Provincetown? I
scheduled a meeting with Town Manager Sharon Lynn to find out. Pam, Sharons
assistant, was unpacking boxes and fielding calls when I walked into her office.
We sat down to talk about her life and work.

Sharons devotion and dedication to Provincetown is so clear. We are lucky to
have her as our town manager.

Q: How did you land the position of Town Manager?

A: My chosen field was law enforcement and I moved up the ranks in West Goshen
Township, Pennsylvania, earning a Masters Degree and then attending the 176th
Session of the FBI National Academy. One of the West Goshens supervisors
(selectman) asked me to consider the job of assistant town manager. I didnt
think that I was suited for it but people around me saw differently. I had been
the Town Manager in West Goshen for ten years when the job opened up in
Provincetown.

But don't let the truth get in the way of your bitterness!

Re: Town Manager

For those who deny Ms. Lynn's experience as a town manager--
From the March 8, 2007 Provincetown Banner:

Lynns in

By Stefan Sirucek
BANNER CORRESPONDENT

PROVINCETOWN  And then there was one.

The board of selectmen met Friday to discuss Provincetowns soon-to-be-vacant
town manager position and came up with a unanimous decision  Sharon Lynn will be
the next town manager.

The field had been narrowed from four candidates to two at the boards last
meeting: Lynn, currently township manager of West Goshen, Pa., and Michael
Coughlin, former city manager of Northbridge and Southbridge.

Before the vote, the selectmen spoke in turn about the two candidates,
discussing the merits and particular strengths of each before voicing their own
preference.

Selectman David Nicolau described the candidates as nearly neck and neck in his
view but eventually came out in favor of Lynn. Sharons familiarity with the town
I think would be a plus, said Nicolau.

I feel that she really knows the town, said Selectman and state Rep. Sarah
Peake, adding she believed Lynns familiarity with local issues was more
important than her relative lack of experience with Massachusetts law. Peake has
known Lynn since she applied for the police chief position in 2001. (See related
sidebar page 19.)

Peake said she believes Lynn, who owns property and vacations in town, possesses
a genuine desire to become part of Provincetown.

This isnt somebody who, in her 11 years as town manager, has been out fishing
for jobs, said Peake. She applied here, didnt get the chiefs job, this job has
come up now and shes applied for it.  My sense is that she really wants to be in
Provincetown.

The Library Renovation Was Way Overbudget!

Town Hall had been condemned.  The many people who work there needed,
and deserved, clean, healthy space.  If the townspeople had chosen to demolish
the old TH and build a new one, it still would have cost millions, and would
probably be a brick box lacking the character that this town values so greatly.

Same with the library.  The building was allowed to fall into disrepair, so the
cost to renovate was much greater than if it had been maintained correctly.

Which leads us to the rest of the town's buildings.  They were neglected for
years under previous town leadership (thank you, Mary Jo), so the cost to make
them habitable, safe, and in compliance with state and federal law is high.

The moral of the story is that the town-- its buildings, its infrastructure, its
services-- must be regularly maintained, or the cost to repair damaged
buildiings, roads, equipment, etc., will be high.  The other option is to not
have those services, to let the buildings fall down, and to purchase services
from Truro or Wellfleet.  This would make Provincetown someone else's problem,
but it would also mean that we've lost our town.

And what            poster thinks people don't read?  What an          remark to
make!! Whether or not people use the library or buy books or use a Kindle,
(most) people in town are educated, inquiring minds who DO read.

Well, contrary to your opinion, I think the landscaping at the new library is
great. It looks beautiful and inviting and it's nice to see people enjoying
themselves on the lawn.

And what exactly are you implying by saying too few people are reading in
Provincetown? Are you trying to say that since few people read we should not
have a library? This is a dangerous line of thinking. Should we encourage kids
to stay home and watch reality television instead? Maybe just tell the elderly
to find some other way to pass the time?

It's like saying "well, everyone's obese anyway, so why bother having a gym?"

Candace would be a very good addition to the Board of Selectmen. She got tons of

The Library Renovation Was Way Overbudget!

How many town meetings did it take to ask for money and then another town
meeting to ask for more money and then another? the library trustees then
promised not to ask for any more---and then they requested another million of
town monies. This has been too much money spent for too little. Itt was
mismanaged and the financials were never on target.

And look at the landscaping? the original landscaping was quite different than
this up-there away-from-anyone landscaping. It's not good and does not fit the
town.

Poorly done and poorly planned and, dare I ask this question: who is reading in
Provincetown? Sorry to ask but who is? Too few.

Re: Nagle for Selectwoman...Run Candace Run!

This would be a dream come true for those of us who are pet owners.  Here is a
candidate that understands us!  All the "townies" care about are their kid's
education and how our tax dollars can be spent to make THEIR lives better.  What
about us?  We only have one dog park in town that Candice built single handedly.
We need a strong, brave woman that will fight for our rights.  It is time for
change and Candice is the candidate that can make a difference.  Look at all she

I am curious why you mention FinCom in your defense of the Town Manager and seem
to suggest it is FinCom who is the cause of the Town Manager's problems. What
would make you think that is true? And why would you support the continued

By the way, which members of FinCom are not qualified and why?

Town Hall Restoration

Fom the July 26, 2010 Banner:

"The interior renovation is being done by North East Interiors of Braintree, for
$3,723,490, plus another $1,585,900 for additional plumbing, heating and
painting work. Phase 1, which involved the repair of the exterior of the
124-year-old building, cost $1.23 million."

That's a total of $6,539,390. $2M of that is being paid for using Community
Preservation Act grant monies and there were other grants as well.

Please stop making numbers up.

From Finance Page on Town Website

The Town of Provincetown received a grant of $132,856 from the U.S. Department
of Agriculture for the library renovations.  To date the Town has received
$355,500 in grants for the renovations including $36,500 from the state as a
Massachusetts Preservation grant with the balance coming in federal grants.  In
addition to the grants, gift funds totaling $100,324 were applied to the
project.  The cost of the project originally approved in April 2010 by town
meeting voters with a maximum cost of $2,092,000 is now projected to be a
maximum of $1,636,176.

The library renovation was NOT over budget.  Get your facts straight and stop

Town Manager

From reading the postings of people who complain bitterly about the Town
Manager, it appears that it's a few people who are writing repeatedly.  This
leads me to believe that this few have hidden agendas or bitterness that drives
their hatred of her.

Some of the comments are flat-out ridiculous.  "How much money has the TM not
raised?"  How would you quantify that?  You could say the same thing about
anyone.  'Some person is doing a great job, but how much more could they be
doing?'

The TM is best friends with so-and-so.  How do you know that? Do they do pinkie
swears in public and walk arm-in-arm, giggling about others?  This town is
small; people know people.  I don't think one can judge how close some other
person is to anyone.
I don't believe that you've heard first-hand that the TM puts people down in
public.  Judging by your rant, you don't really know her, and I'm sure she's
professional enough not to bad-mouth people to strangers.
I agree with the poster who said that this is FinCom's way of trying to cover
themselves.  The Town Moderater appointed people who were in no way qualified
for this board, and the townspeople are going to feel the brunt of their
incompetence in the coming years.
Oh, and speaking of best friends and cabals, how about the Moderater appointing
her husband, a clear case of nepotism, and her 'best friend' Clarence?
Will you dare to post this? It's no more slanted than what I see on this blog
daily, with the exception that the people I'm questioning are the people
associated with this blog, and not town government.

Re: Town Manager

Please be specific.  If you're calling for someone
to be fired, you should have valid reasons, not just hysteria.

OK. I am not including rumors or gossip on this list, just things that I have
first-hand knowledge of. Here goes:

1. She encourages people (town employees, residents, board members, etc.) to
utilize her "open door policy," promises confidentiality, and then immediately
goes to her friends with the info and then lies about it when questioned.  You
want more specific? Her top friend is Ann Maguire, and the TM has shared other
people's private and personal info with her, as well as confidential town info.
She also consults with her friends about hiring and firing. Totally
inappropriate.

2.  She trashes elected officials, town employees, and board members in private
to people she is trying to fool into trusting her. You want more specific? I
have heard her say very nasty and inappropriate things about Mary Jo Avellar,
Austin Knight, David Guertin, Vernon Porter, Mick Rudd, and several former
employees who left as a result of her sneaky shananigans. She even has ringtones
like squacking and animal noises set on her cell phone for people she dislikes.
(That wouldn't really be a problem if she didn't share that info with others.)

3. She writes her budgets in such a way that it appears that jobs are being
eliminated, so that she can get rid of people she doesn't like (yes, non-union
positions, too). Then the positions are renamed and new people are chosen by her
and hired to do exactly the same job. (She got caught at this at last town
meeting.)

4. She shares private and confidential information with her partner, Patsy
Greene, who has openly shared this info at HOW board meetings (PG is on that
board). (I suspect the same is true with the library board that she also serves
on; I have heard this only second-hand.)

I wish I could share the specifics of the info she has shared, but that would be
unfair to the people involved. most of whom have been hurt enough already.

Anyone else care to be specific? I know there are a lot of you out there who
have been victims.  Beware, you defenders of Sharon Lynn. You could be next

From the DPW page; "Provincetown is the recipient from USDA Rural Development of
$22 million in federal stimulus money (ARRA) for major water and sewer capital
projects."

That doesn't include money for town hall and a bunch of state grants as well.

Pretty good return on TM's salary I'd say.

The reason for the renewed attacks on TM is because Finance Committee is a
shambles and the bitter blogger and cohorts serving on there are going to try to
blame the TM when the budget process falls apart this fall due to the abject
incompetence of most members of that committee these days. So they try to
pre-damage her on here.

the crowd control was not planned out at all. People leaving

Town Hall Auditorium Air Conditioning

May i respectfully suggest to the Provincetown Building Commissioner that he run

The parts of Commercial Street being repaved are part commercial zone but more
distance is being repaved in the west end residential zone, not the business
district. We are leaving businesses and residents in the gallery district out of
luck to more quickly accommodate the residents of the west end waterfront.

The best way to have luck in Provincetown is to be a friend of Sharon Lynn as
the re-paving priorities prove.

I don't think Clarence has ever given the pretense of a fair forum for debate.
This is his blog, the facts and postings are skewed to how he wants it to
appear.  And I don't think he ever claimed it was fair.

I Don't See or Read Ony a Minority of Voices Here

Many people post and their posts are reflected here. I see many different views
and they are about issues that bother them. Those Polyannas who only want to see
clean beaches, sweet town officials, happy faces, should look elsewhere. Maybe
to the Banner. But here, it is both praises and problems, good deeds and failed
actions. It reflects what people care about and the issues they'd like to see
rectified. for that I'm grateful and find it most interesting.

FinComm Recording Secretary

A good question was asked on the Provincetown Community page.  The
Finanance Committee is advertising on facebook for a minutes taker for their
meetings.  The following question was asked:

"just curious...who's paying for this since the FinComm does not have any money
budgeted for this and this would not be considered an appropriate use of the
FinComm Emergency Fund?"

I'm not sure what the FinCom Emergency Fund is, but it doesn't seem like minutes
taking would be an emergency.  Can anyone answer this question?

Re: Streets and TM, etc.

Gee, ya got me there, all the streets in town aren't being repaved at the same
instant. Street paving is a never ending many million dollar process over the
course of decades. Commercial Street is the most heavily trafficked commercial
zone in town as well as the most visible street. It hosts the bulk of revenue
generating commercial activity. It also is the prime source of street run off
pollution to our bay. So, given that it supports a lot of revenue and it impacts
one of our most important natural resources makes sense to me that it is
priority #1 in repaving. If you would like all paving in town done at the same
time please submit your concrete (pun intended) plan to the Finance Committee
and copy us readers here on Nasty-PACC.

To imply directly that the sections of commercial st are being repaved just
because of those rich gays that live there is complete and utter BS. That is
what is divisive in this town, that nasty nasty attitude and just plain
falsehoods. Nothing is ever right, no decision is taken without shadowy control
of some glbt cabal. You are a sad troubled person.

As a side note the only thing divisive about the town manager is that she is not
controlled by the group that controls and posts so frequently on this blog. It
drives them nuts as evidenced by their incessant, unsubstantiated attacks on her
and whatever their favorite whipping boy town official of the day is.

Question, blog-propagandist Clarence, why won't you allow any criticism - even
documented facts - of your cohorts on here while you allow any and all atracks
on those you personally disagree wuth?

Until you answer this fundamental question your pretense of a fair forum for
debate of town issue is transparently false.

What preferential treatment? Please be specific.  If you're calling for someone
to be fired, you should have valid reasons, not just hysteria.

Questions and Answers

Answers:
1. Suzi Fults no longer works for the town.  She probably openly posted on
Candace's blog because she'd already resigned and didn't care if anyone knew who
she was-- she's long gone to the South by now.

2. You can't pave during the high season.  After Labor Day the work will begin
again, I assume, and continue until it's completed.

3. Theft of unlocked bicycles is entirely the fault of the bicycle owner.  How
would a police officer know if a person riding a bike is riding his/her own or a
stolen one? It's not like cars with license plates to identify them.  What
rational person would leave a bicycle (or cell phone, purse, or care with keys
in it) unattended?  This is a tourist town with an influx of up to 50,000 on a
given day.  What do you expect? This is not Mayberry.

4. Police officers do not spend all their time in their vehicles.  They have to
complete paperwork, book prisoners, and do various administrative things like
secure evidence.  Like any worker in this town, they deserve a clean, safe
space.  No one is talking Taj Mahal, but what they have now looks like it was
put together with cardboard and chewing gum.

5. Two town employees were caught stealing money.  If they were not immediately
dismissed, thank your union representative.  The union requires mountains of
paperwork before an employee is terminated, even if they commit egregious acts.

Questions:
1. People rage against the Town Manager, the administration, the police chief,
and BOS.  Please be specific.  What terrible sins have they committed?  Why must
they 'go' immediately?  Just because you don't personally like someone doesn't
mean they're not good at their jobs.  Do you really understand what a TM does
all day?  I certainly don't, but with so many employees, that must take up a
huge amount of time by itself.  Plus any citizen who walks in the door must have
their questions answered and issues addressed.  Plus the TM represents
Provincetown throughout the Cape and in the State, so there are necessary
meetings outside of town.

2. Do you people a)not know how to spell or b)write these posts when you've been
drinking?  The spelling and grammar are appalling.

3. Why, when you're expressing opinions, do you feel the need to denigrate
people by disparaging their looks?  Surely we're better than this.

No, I don't work for the town but I've lived other places, and I know when a
town is in good shape.  Provincetown is fiscally healthy and the tourists throng
here.  The administration must be doing something right.

Just My Observation

For the past week I have gone by the Police Station, the front lawn looks
horrible. I know some times it was obvious it needed to be cut but never saw it

the custodian you had out of his job. Atleast he never let it look like it does

How is it that the Historical Commission (Historic District Commission) has allowed the
most awful and non-historical windows to be installed at 3 Point Street (one of the

Also, this work is being done without a permit.  The authorities need to put a stop to
this immediately as it is ruining this beautiful little neighborhood.

You are probably right.  The extreme negativity of the vocal minority on this

right thing for this town and get trashed on this blog for it.

The DPW worker who is out there working in this heat and humidity.  I wonder how
he or she motivates themself to go to work for a town that said we'll vote for

"Um, gee, somewhere I read, possibly at the top of this page, that

I'm not surprised to see the residential west end of Commercial Street on the
top of the list for repaving.

But the poster is wrong, Commercial street from the Truro line to Johnson Street
have no plans in place for repaving and those portions are in bad shape. What's
more high traffic sections of Bradford, Shankpainter and Conwell remain unpaved
and no plans exist to do so. Not to mention a whole maze of streets north of
Bradford that the Town Manager couldn't find with a map.

It's not surprising is that a residential section of Commercial in the "high
rent" district is getting repaved while the rest of town waits.

Town Manager

"I have heard on the streets and read postings here about the Town

all the previous Town Managers, there has never been anyone this town has fully
been happy with. "

The problem is that people seem to think that the Town Manager is a life long
job.  Sharon was the right person at the right time. That is no longer true.
Same thing was true of Bergman.

Better for both town and Sharon to make the change before it gets even worse.
11:40 pm edt

Town Hall Stop Sign

It was originally put up so the handicap spots could be more accessible.  Then
they moved the Handicap spots because it was not working out. Really it's just
OUI trap at night.  No problem with that. Drunks should not be driving. Except
that when there is someone pulled over it becomes a HAZARD to pass.

The Traffic at the stop sign has created a huge mess. The buses can not cut
the turn with cars at a stop, essentially all day.  The change in the Wharf
parking exit has created even more traffic for that corner and on Commercial st
and Ryder very rarely is there any traffic enforcement to help. At Standish a
Commercial most times crossing is a hazard and a Hail Mary, again very rarely is
there an officer posted to help things along.

If you drive Bradford which is unavoidable at times you should plan twenty
minutes of extra time in your travel.

Provincetown traffic control is less present then ever before.  Clearly our
Police department has other agendas.

Like how to spend money and reduce year round jobs (such as the Pier issue
among many).

I am not sure what our elected officials are doing this year so far NOTHING! I can
only encourage more people to vote , go to town meetings and do not stand silent
in these meetings.

Lower the speeds on Bradford street are not the going to help.  The average speed
limit is 15mph. Only in the winter can you actually move at 15mph.

Re: Town Manager Postings

I have heard on the streets and read postings here about the Town Manager and I
sat back and wondered what the fix is. As I sit and think about all the previous
Town Managers, there has never been anyone this town has fully been happy with.
Is it because the Selectmen have failed to take a more active role, is it
because the Unions in this town have become weaker or is it just the way things
are in this town ?

Or in a deck of cards are the jokers being allowed to play...i.e...The Police
Chief, The Librarian and/or the Town Manager ? As long as the people in this
town remain undecisive and lack the ability to come together and let our leaders
know the game is over, this craziness is never going to diminish.

One way to drive home the message we are not happy is to stop sending the Police
Dept donations, vote down the Police Station and bend your selectmen/selectwomans
ears till the two most prominent people get the message we need change before
things get worse. Do you hear us Sharon ?

Um, gee, somewhere I read, possibly at the top of this page, that paving of all

Personally, I'll take a reliable, redundant water supply no longer leaking

working sewer system expanded so I don't have to swim in your poop, and storm
drains that reduce junk flowing into the bay before paved streets. Oh, and if

"It is time to get back to the work of the people."

Really?

It's August. While I don't work, because I'm disabled and live in subsidized
housing (thank you Ted, Michelle and the person who pulled my name out of the
lottery hat), I think its hard for residents to focus on the future right now.
Everyone but me works two or three jobs.

I will say, however, that spending millions on a new police station is a real
waste of money. The patrolmen are on foot or in their cruisers. They are the
future of this town, even if they run over disabled pedestrians. So long as they
have a radio and air conditioning (or heat in the winter), they should be good
to go.

For the few who work in the station, why not renovate the dump? That's what we
do here on the Cape. It was a funeral home, now it's a police station. Just  a
bunch of driftwood needing to be moved along.

Click your heels, Glenda, add some crystal and a few ornaments from e-Bay and
you've got the Taj Mahal. Happy now?

Every time we've spent money on a new building, costs have sky rocketed and
taxes have risen. What's left of the taxpayers with disposable money, few will
vote at the ballot box to approve a new station. The majority of non prop-owners
are disgusted with the management of our town.

So move on to Plan B before winter; otherwise, your (chest)nuts will be cold.

About the DPW need for new quarters. Why not continue         money from the
counter? That seems to be what you people do....

I once agreed with you, but now believe the Town Manager has become too
divisive, too politically involved and as a result much less effective than when
she arrived.

So she had a great start, and did a lot of very good things, but the skills
needed now: consensus building, bridging disagreements, and working with

I Like Both Candace and Clarence..........Go Figure

Candace's Facebook page is very odd, though.  I don't really understand the
point of decrying anonymity and then using an anonymous ID to post.  The whole
thing is very screechy and for someone who is espousing a "no hate" mantra it
reads very much like a personal attack blog.  I'm pretty sure Clarence could get
it shut down by Facebook if he chose to.  Racist?  Not even a little bit. And
I'm sure her page is having the unintended consequence of driving traffic here.

As for defamation/libel, etc., I've warned about this previously waaaaay back
when.  It would be interesting to have an actual lawyer opine.  My understanding
is that the threshold for a "public figure" is very high, which is most of the
posts on this blog.  That said, I don't know if private citizen Board volunteers
count as public figures or not.  My guess is that they probably do, but that is
really just a guess.

Re: Money For Local Causes

Really, Clarence?
You need to take a step back and look at what you're allowing on your web site.
It's crap like this that really gutterizes this site even more than the normal
sophomoric posts. Yeah, I realize it's someone's pathetic attempt at satire, but
a Candace (insert other names here) wrong doesn't make a Clarence right.
I've lived here full time for 12 years, and like many other people, I had
planned on getting involved on boards and volunteering to help make Provincetown
everything that I hoped it could be, but it didn't take long before I realized
that "no good deed goes unpunished" was written specifically for here. This
place is loaded with unhealthy people who thrive on negativity and devote
themselves to making sure everyone is as miserable as they are. They see
conspiracy and hidden agendas wherever they look. They fabricate 'facts' to
support their position. They are paranoid, delusional, petty and angry. But they
are the proverbial big fish in a small pond, and therein lies their power.
Provincetown, and the world in general, would be a better place if they could
see as much good being done as they see evil. Believe it or not readers,
sometimes people just want to help for the sake of contributing something. Not
everything in the world is done to make sure you have less.
There are more important issues in the world than devoting yourself to writing
the drivel that you host here.

a personal car and 3 detectives what is he crazy and the town mgr allows this?!
Are you sure there is                      on here?! Something is wrong and this
town needs to wake the hell up

Grasping at Straws

Gotta agree with the poster who criticized the ridiculous notion that
Candace's posting a photo of Clarence is in some way racist. The idea is
nonsensical and ludicrous.

I mean, seriously, please explain how this is racist? No mention is made of his
race, no derogatory comments alluding to his race. Seriously, what the hell are
you talking about?

Whoever is posting these rants is really grasping at straws. And Clarence, by
printing these ridiculous allegations of racism, you are looking a bit desperate
yourself. Show a bit of dignity, will you?

Hem the Loose Cuffs

I encourage everyone to calm down here a little bit. There seems to
be, of late, little discussion of issues related to government and more sabre
throwing and horrific blood-letting than anything else. Step back and assess
your goals here, people. We all live in this town together, shop in the same
market, run into each other at the post office and owe it to ourselves as
citizens to be honorable with each other.

Nothing ever gets accomplished by killing each other with words. Civil and
logical discussion is acceptable. Sniffing and cutting for blood through vitriol
is no more than cannibalism of the collective spirit of our community.  Problems
exist here, yes. But are they worth creating divisions that may be irreparable?
I would suggest not. I would further suggest we take a breath and focus. We're
all good people at the core. We are one group who share the same passion for a
town that is old and gorgeous and frayed at the edges. Let's do better to hem
the loose cuffs.

You know I'm right... You know you do not REALLY hate your neighbor. Let's grow
up a bit, shall we?

Money For Local Causes

Three new dolls have been launched to raise money for local causes.

They will be sold on Candaces Hate Space Page and by Austin at his button
vending booth each Saturday in front of Town Hall.  Hes going to raise $10,00
dont you know.

Candy is  a troll doll style device which attaches to any pen or pencil.  Voice
activated technology causes the hair to set alight so you can light a cigarette
or a campfire, etc.   All you have to do is say anything contrary about Town
Staff. Of course any  sentence which forms a question is considered negative so
caution is warranted.  For adults who act like children only for obvious safety
reasons.

Sharie is sure to be a summer hit.  Shes like a 100lb cabbage patch kid. A face
like bull mastiff makes her ugly but cute at the same time. She speaks double
speak only and  all sentences are phrased as denials of some sort.  A fun
addition to any household and doubles as a door stop or pet toy.

GI  Jeff makes a Syrian cop look like a human rights campaigner.  Nattily
dressed, He stands three feet tall and attaches to a ROOMBA auto vacuum cleaner.
This allows him to roam uninvited and loudly from room to room barking out
orders and threats.  He comes with a  GI JOE style paddy wagon which heats up to
make citizens sweat and after 15 minutes it causes his ammunition to explode.
There is no way to automatically open the locks nor any fire sprinklers so this
toy comes with a years worth of prisoner doll refills.

News Alert...

Sharon and Jeff just allocated funds from their off the
books "black operations" funds to allow Candace a new exclusive Series on PTV.
It will be multimedia because Pru will parrot everything in the her daily column
by the same name "WINNING!"

Can't wait to watch.

A Shaman Walks Among Us!

Exactly who is the wet blanket commentator snuffing out all of the
undocumented, fanciful, vitriolic and hateful posts on this illustrious blog?
How dare you counteract with fact and logic! Can you tell me with a straight
face that this blog, beyond foisting bile, deadly glee and pitiful misspelling
into the community may not the pantheon of influence it claims to be?

Well, whomever you may be, o Wet Blanket of Knowledge and Balance, many thanks to
you for dousing the fires of fools. A shaman walks among us!

When Such Intense Hatred is Driven Against One Person

You have to look for the deep-seeded cause. This is a deep personal attack
against Clarence Walker, not his blog. Plus, he only post the postings. He is
not writing the blog. so Candace's pure vile attack needs to be understood as
what it is: racist. She is attacking this man, his person, his acts and she is
even putting his photo on her vile facebook page. Where is this defilement
coming from? I concur: Candace is racist and deserves to be called what she is.
she should hang her head in shame. Her actions as despicable as racism itself.

Kudos to the Town Government Blogger

From what I have heard and seen, it's amazing what the Town Manager is allowing
(or is contributing) to, exactly why they got rid of this Police chief in New
Hampshire.

Since he has been here, he created three detectives which all get a
good salary from being in those positions.Provincetown always got by with one
until Jaran came along.

He has also tried to get a new police station that you all know about. He sold his
personal truck once Sharon Lynn gave him a cruiser to travel up and down the
Cape in.

All previous staff Sgt's were never given an unmark cruiser to use but as soon as
Jaran created a Lt's position guess what he did and what the Lt did with his personal
vehicle and guess what he too does with his cruiser.

The list is endless and unless everyone here starts questioning this Chief and Town
Manager, he's going to do what he almost did in New Hampshire.

Wake up P'town.

Re: For Me, Candace Nagle's Facebook is Racist

Who Is Candance to Put a Photo of clarence on Her villifying Facebook

As someone stated, she has turned out to be a racist. Why not name what she is
doing. She's gone nuts and why? I'm asking myself what is happening in her sick
brain and I agree: its her racism that is surfacing and she doesn't like being
denied by a black person. She thinks he should kissing her big arse but instead,
he is turning away from her rants.  Candace is revealing her true nature,
unfortunately. It is not admirable at all.

Re: For Me, Candace Nagle's Facebook is Racist

Lemme get this straight (oops is that anti gay?)

Clarence is African American. Therefore saying something against him makes the
speaker "racist"???

Don't you see how stupid this is? What's next? Should the pot call the kettle
stove top - American? I heard that "black" is no longer acceptable.

Re: Town Government

I agree 100%, the Town Manager and the Police Chief need to pack their bags. Self
serving police agenda with little or no regard for the tax payers footing the bills.
Sick and tired of it.

SELECTMEN WAKE THE HELL UP!  Do not renew their contracts and try and employ
someone as town manager that has no police agenda ie: not a former police chief
as our town manager like Sharon Lynn.

This is not anti-police Chief Jaran, but anti-spending and anti-over policing a
tiny town with virtually no crime.

OK, I think this town has had enough of this town manager and police
chief. They think they are running a city and not a 3 mile town. Anything he
wants he gets and anything she wants she gets. We need to stand up against them
before this town ends up in debt like this country.

We need to stand our ground against this police station. We do not need a police
station for that kind of money and we do not need all these damn vehicles.
What happened to their feet and legs?

A new police station could be built where Jerome smith rd Parking lot
is for less money. It's a perfect location and the officers can walk over the

I Agree: It comes down to an Old Issue: Racism

And racism is alive and well here with Candace Nagle. She is not attacking a
blog--but she is personally villifying a person. She is putting his picture on
her vile facebook page and attacking Clarence personally.

She has gone too far. This is defamation, racist, and hate-filled actions by
this       woman.

Re: For Me, Candace Nagle's Facebook is Racist

Racist?  WTF????

This is clearly a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Since when is posting someones picture racist? Could the race baiter who made
that post please explain the racism expressed or implied by the facebook blog.
I have yet to see anything remotely racist on that blog. posting that pic is
fine.  Now i know who to shun if  per chance i should encounter him in a social
situation.

Pot meet kettle.  I find your cankles comment to be misogynistic.  You never
hear people describing men with the term cankles.

Clarence, how could you allow such a derogatory comment on your "civil" blog?
It is clearly nothing more than a personal attack and adds nothing to the
discordant discourse discussed here daily.

WOW. Only a town employee(and Truro resident) has "liked" that post. It was
liked during office hours for her department. Is she home sick today? Or is she

please provide multiple footnoted and duplicately confirmed sources backing up
your statements.
2) if you wish to criticize any town employee, a lesbian or gay town citizen or
town board member (other than FinCom), Candace Nagle, or generally anyone group
mentioned in #1 doesn't like or perceives as more reasonable,  intelligent or
wealthier than them - basically much of town and all second homeowners-  then
sling away and say whatever you want.

If you cannot follow the above rules you will find your posts end up in the

Let's not forget the ethnic slur of calling Vice Chair Canizales  by the generic
mexicali name "Gonzales" in the BoS meeting.

But I don't think Walker's picture was posted as a racist issue despite the
cropping. And I sure hope I am wrong, but the picture might be posted to cause
Mr Walker harm or harassment?   I now this is how operation rescue targets
family planning physicians. Given the bias of the Provincetown Police, Walker
may wish to check in the State Police or Barnstable County Sheriff??

Let's hope I am too cautious.

Do you have evidence of 'funny games' currently going on?  If you do please tell

I can tell you from my inside source that there is zero concern from staff at

hours searching for things that aren't there.  It's just a lot of hot air.

Incredible Dining

Five of us went over the bridge to a delightful restaurant. We had 3 bottles of
wine, three people had top shelf martinis, we had salads with our meal and
wonderful entrees and we all ended up with doggie bags..and the bill was $117.00

Sunday night is customer appreciation night at another restaurant and bar and we
had a steak for $5.00 and fried shrimp and fries for $5.00

Last night two of us went out to the same restaurant and bar and had a martini
and a glass of wine, I had salad and spaghetti bolgonese with meatballs for
$8.95 and my friend had fried shrimp for $7.95

The bill was $24.00 a big absolute martini is $6.50 with extra vodka in the side
of ice!!! I just can't go out and dine in Provincetown anymore where the wine
list starts at $30.00 in some restaurants.

Re: Police Traffic Details........

".  .  .  How is it that one police officer becomes the third most
highly paid municipal employee in Provincetown, .  ."

Look at the annual report at salaries.  Police get a ton of overtime and pay for
police details which are listed as revolving.  My understanding is that a police
officer who wants to earn some extra money can volunteer for police details over
and above a regular 40 hour work week.  That detail isn't overtime, but it is
paid very well.
9:18 am edt

Re: Police Traffic Details........

"If you researched what you were talking about before you opened your
mouth, you would have realized the town does not pay for detail officers."

I asked the finance director this question right after the annual report came
out and I saw the high police salaries.  If Nstar needs a police detail they pay
for it so the above poster is partially correct.  However, if the sewer needs a
police detail that is paid for by sewer users, the taxpayers.
